    • Is fresh water flushing worthwhile? 1 2 3

January 19, 2017 at 8:08 am Years ago, following Tony’s recommendation, I hooked up fresh water flush fittings to my engine’s strainer and started flushing religiously. Within less than a year I noticed that the engine zincs were holding up much better; in fact after three years they are still going strong. I also believed that I was reducing corrosion on my raw water metal components, particularly the after cooler. Tony has implied that you can double the inte…

Apologies for reviving an old thread, but Iā€™ve tried multiple searches and cannot find the Tonyā€™s Tips article on fresh water flushing. Itā€™s referenced in the ā€œmarine ageā€ article but no link and I have had zero luck finding it. Are you looking for a “how-to” ? There is no such instruction as one size does not fit all. • Cummins QSB 5.9 fuel flow calibration

December 7, 2016 at 1:38 am I have a pair of QSB 5.9 355 hp. 476 hours. Both engines have different consumption figures at same RPM. Both props were recently de pitched because the previous owner’s log recorded WOT at 2650 RPM 26.5 knots. Had the prop pitched reduced by 1.5 inch (could be a mistake) and now WOT 2890 RPM 26.5 knots. Props are 4 bladed 21 x 24.5. At 2600RPM 24 knots. With the great difference in fuel consumption, it is difficult to determine which is c…

May 18, 2017 at 1:16 am Installed the vacuum gauges, reading normal Check engine rpm reading on Smartcraft with handheld tachometer – results 2 rpm difference. Check gearbox output shaft rpm with handheld tachometer -less than 0.3% difference. Pulled out the prop to check the pitch by the prop shop that re pitched the prop – result – both prop has same pitch reading Not happy with the prop shop, went to another prop shop – pitch the same but the…

    • Cleaning air filters

May 1, 2017 at 6:13 pm I’ve searched thru the forums here, boatdiesel, and Tiara but struck out.Ā  Maybe someone can point me in the right direction. I have twin QSB 5.9 engines with cone shaped air filters that look like K&N linen filters used in cars.Ā  Should I just wash them in mild detergent and oil them with K&N oil?Ā  Or do I just replace them? Ā  At what interval?Ā  Thx. Ā Ā

May 13, 2017 at 9:15 am Thanks for the information. Ā Again, I learn something new, which is why I asked. I have no idea if/when the internal coalescing filter was changed. Ā I also don’t know when/if the filter was cleaned last. Ā 1000 hours on the engine at this point, of which 250 were hours I put on over a year. So far as I mentioned above, the gauge on the Airsep has not shown any restriction, but I think it is time to clean the filter just based on its appeara…

April 4, 2017 at 2:40 pm New to me 2007 formula with Qsb 5.9 425 ho.Ā  Plan in bringing her home from NC to Nyc early may and want to change the fuel filters before we leave. 2 questions 1. Which micron should I start with for the racors 30 or 10? When I change the last chance filters I was told that i should prefill them with diesel and then cycle the key 4 times at 15 second intervals to bleed the air.Ā  Is this the best way to bleed my qsb’s Thanks for the assist…

    • Gear Cooler Leaking Oil

This topic has 2 replies, has 2 voices, and was last updated by1sadler 7 years ago

April 4, 2017 at 9:03 am My Cummins QSB 5.9 gear cooler is leaking oil from a 45 degree elbow on the oil inlet or outlet. You can see the oil on the elbow in the attached photo. Before I start messing with the elbow and hoses, I thought I should post here and see if it’s ok to just start trying to simply tighten the elbow. My hesitation to just put a wrench to things comes from the red paint marks showing on the inlet and outlet hoses. I’m betting these pain…

April 3, 2017 at 7:03 am Pulled after coolers, heat exchangers and oil coolers on my 370Bs. Ā  Cooler cores where easily removed, pushed out by hand with no effort. Ā  There was corrosion and more than I was hoping to see on the port cooler. Ā I cleaned everything up and have a couple of question. Ā  After sanding the cooler housing does it need to be perfectly smooth (see picture) and does it have be re coated. Ā Not sure if the black finish is a coating or anodized. Ā  The …

April 4, 2017 at 2:08 pm On both cores dry fit them in the housings, center them with even amount protruding through the housing at both ends, Ā and look at where the o-rings sit, that is the sealing surface area that you need to get smooth. Ā If brazed, machining should not be required, you can use the housing for checking fit as you sand smooth.

April 3, 2017 at 5:15 am I have 2002 370 BTA’s and have not personally serviced them before. I’ve read many of your articles (thank you) and removed aftercoolers, then cores and tried to clean them. Ā I had some trouble removing the starboard one. Ā I used kroil, a wood block and rubber mallet, which resulted in some deformation of the top of a few tubes. The port one was relatively easy to remove, but as you can see was somewhat damaged at the ends from previ…

April 4, 2017 at 2:03 pm Sounds like you got it. Ā The flats on the housing where the o-ring gets crushed by the cap is a sealing surface as is the sidewall of the core end. Ā And the bevel inside the cap as well, clean that real good with a 3m pad or such.

February 13, 2017 at 5:19 pm Cummins QSB 5.9L 380 engine.Ā  This boat is relatively new to me and I had the aftercooler serviced by a shop not too long after I took possession.Ā  At that time, the mechanic replaced the engine zincs when reinstalling the aftercooler.Ā  He ended up using some type of thread sealant on the threads.Ā  My question is basic, what type of thread sealant can be used if I find that the plugs leak at the specified torque?

    • Heat Exchanger Flat End Cap Fix

This topic has 2 replies, has 2 voices, and was last updated byRob Schepis 7 years ago

October 19, 2016 at 9:25 pm Is your heat exchanger cap weeping at the outer perimeter? Ā Is it “flattened” from years of over-tightening? Ā It is important to put the “concave” back in the cap if it has been over tightened over time and flattened. Think of the cap as a big lock-washer as you “snug” it up. If itĀ“s too flat you will crush the center gum washer before putting any sealing pressure on the outer perimeter. Here’s the fix i…
