I tried searching a few compound terms and came up empty. I also looked through Tony’s Tips and did not find anything about this specifically.

I am about to change the oil for the first time on my 480CE’s and transmissions. I am good to go on everything except 1 process. How do I remove the LF9009 on the starboard engine without causing a HUGE mess? I am not able to post a picture to this original message so I will post a pic as a follow up. 2005 460 Sundancer. V-Drives.

My port engine has the remote oil filter so no issue there. It is the strbd engine that has the filter tucked behind a bunch of stuff that has me perplexed. At the most naive, I could twist off, lower and then tilt with a “container” or whatever underneath to catch the oil that comes out of the filter…………. Do I puncture the bottom of the filter and catch what comes out of that little hole? Do I disconnect the fuel lines(blue in foreground) tilt out that way then reconnect and prime once I am done with the oil filter?

Anyone out there have any words of wisdom on this?

    Thank You!

    lpmcc,

Thank you. That is how I had envisioned it in my head. I do think I need to position the new filter behind all of the lines and other filters before I fill with new oil. I have all of the oil and filters I just need to get an empty bucket, suitable plastic freezer bags and some diapers. I am going to write my own procedure manual so that I can do it in my words. That will help me cement the process in memory as well as having a future reference for when I have permanently killed those brain cells………

Thank you all again for lending your knowledge and experience.

I have 6CTA 450 hp, but have a similar set up. I do not have the remote coolant filter that you do (wish I did!) that is in the way. I know it is not the recommended way, but if you don’t run the engine before changing the filter, very little oil will spill out. Running the engine fills up the filter. After sitting, some of the oil in the filter drains back to the pan. I just put down some diapers and put a freezer bag around the filter (after loosening with a strap wrench) and unscrew by hand. I have a new filled oil filter ready to install so just remove the old, install the new…..only a few drops on the diapers.

    Gene and Scotth,

Thank you for the responses. I think the plastic bag idea will give me the most flexibility in how I maneuver the filter once I get it unscrewed. I appreciate the help.

Can you get a 1 or 2 gallon plastic bag (tough ziplock freezer bag?) around it?

I don’t have that exact setup, but when faced with something similar I make a catch bucket out of an old milk jug or similar. Cut it so it will fit. Sometimes gallon size, sometimes half-gallon size.

If you are careful there will not be a large quantity to catch.
