Upgraded coolant plumbing for the 6BT-6BTA
Spend some time looking thru the pictures in the link.. You can “see” what you have now vs. where you need to go to plumb it like the newer engines.. There are a few variations, but the basics as all the same.
The Large expansion tank is the hard one to find used and they are not cheap from Cummins. If you are a fabricator and have a lot of very free time, you could make one that would work better that what you have now.

COOLANT TANK
Thanks Tony all you spoke about I kinda figured is a must. All sounds reasonable. Does not scare me off yet, but wonder if some of these parts can be picked up on like Ebay any ideas?

Yes, you can update the coolant system on this engine– you’ll need more than just a “big tank” to do it though.. Getting this engines coolant system and serpentine drive on the front up to current spec ( you need both, trust me) will run you about $1000-$1200 in parts / hoses, misc fittings, etc, each——————-Now, you have “someones” labor………A very world while project though if you end up with the boat.
. Plus this , I’m sure your seawater pumps will need to be replaced while you are at it–Probably original from 1990 or so which means the “innards” are done..
Alternator and coolant pump?? Original ??? If so, replace them.

Ditching the Corner Tank… Options
How about some really good pics of your engine as installed in your engine room.
Do you have the height and room to do an “off-engine” tank” ?
Are you very “hands-on” or is this going to be something where you need to rely on others ?
