I thought I posted this, but can’t find it. Looking for a boat with Cummins engines. The Stamas 32 Sportfisherman is the type of boat that would work well for us and I have found one with the 6lp yanmars in it, but I want Cummins. Does anyone have any knowledge that Cummins have ever been retrofitted into this boat or even it would fit. I believe the dimensions of the 6bta and the yanmar 6lp 315hp are similar but know the torque/rpm are different. Thanks

    Cummins in a Stamas

3 or 4 inches difference shouldn’t be any problem in the Stamas 32 as I recall from crawling around in the engine room with the 454s. But I have to see pictures of the 6lp to see if the additional 3 to 4 inches for the Cummins would be a problem. Thanks for the drawings. A little easier to see than mine and I didn’t have a tx. on the Cummins. Also the height was another consideration.

    Ray,

Your measurements as to what matters are not quite accurate..

Using the same gear on both engines ( the ZF63A, so it’s “apples for apples”) the 6LP can make a major difference as to a nicer to deal with install.. Gear output flange to the front on the belt guard ( that is what matters)

    Lenght: 51.4″ vs 47.5″

    Width: 30″ vs 27″

Weight: The 6LPA is not less than 330 lbs less, “Apples for Apples”.. On a small vessel that is a real number as to overall performance.

Bob, was that engine in a Stamas 32? …

No, that was not a Stamas, just an example as to how they are more than one way to “fit” an engine in a boat as often seen by different yards and builders.

    Cummins in a Stamas

Tony, thanks for the reply. I understand marine age as a big factor, my reference was to the fact a 1200 hr. service was coming due. I asked the local yanmar dealer about that as to what it was and typical cost and didn’t really get an answer as to what it was and typical cost so as I noted not really comfortable with the local situation.

As to size my only knowledge there was the dimension specs listed for the engines and as I read them the The length and height were similar but the Cummins was wider. Now installation may make those numbers meaningless, although in the Stamas 32 I had with the 454s one could get all around the engines. Got to get the pictures of the Yanmar installation in the boat that is in question. It probably is a good engine for that boat when you want to go diesel.
Since there doesn’t seem to be knowledge of a Cummins installed in the Stamas will give up on that model boat and continue my search with keyword Cummins.

Its’ not the 1100 hours on any of these Yanmars–It’s MARINE AGE coupled to what happened as to proper maintenance during the TIME from the day the engine touched saltwater.. I personally have seen many 6LP’s go over 5000 hours–The valve seal issue was easy to deal with if done proactively.. As to size, quite a bit smaller overall that a 6BTA, but yes, more complex.. To me that engine fit a niche for many applications.

    Cummins in a Stamas

Bob, was that engine in a Stamas 32? I had one with 454s and the the hatches in the salon all opened up with lots of room to get around the engines. I know the Cummins is larger, similar in size to the 6lp, so if that is in a Stamas 32 sport fisherman than it is a tight fit. I’ll see if I can get pictures of the yanmar installation.

For Tony. Your observation interesting regarding the 6lp. I know there were valve seal issues-don’t know if this one is subject to that, and know there are 850 and 1200 maintenance requirements as well. If I were near you, so you could do my maintenance that would be great, but I’m in the panhandle of Florida and Yanmar support is something else. I had two boats with yanmars, one was the 4cyl 170 and the other was the 4 cyl 230. They did pretty good for me but, all things considered, I am reluctant to take on the 1100 hour 6lp.

    Ray,

Personally, I’d prefer a properly installed and properly taken care on 6LPA in that boat over any Cummins. To me, nothing worse in a boat that have an engine stuffed in place to where it cannot be properly serviced and maintained………The Yanmar 6LPA, properly installed & maintained, is great engine–I was sorry to see it go way in this country..

Just because the 6LP “fits”, does not mean that the 6BTA will fit, and if it does, will it be a “good fit”. Like this picture I took on a recent inspection – this engine was “fitted” into the vessel…

Have good pics of the engine room with the 6LP’s?
