May 12, 2018 at 9:22 am Hey Guys, Finished my repower and while doing some sea trials found that the paint burned on the wastegate during WOT. The engine is a 5.9 QSB480 and WOT specs are 3450RPM, 1.5psi exhaust back pressure, 94%load, 25ish GPH, a little over 800 degrees exhaust temp, and just under 36 pounds of boost. Just wanted to check and see if this was normal for the paint to burn. On the plus side the boat cruises comfortable at 2800 rpm, 15gph, 70% load …

May 13, 2018 at 6:10 am Somewhat normal.. I’d be thinking 3″ of pitch.. This engine performs best when it literally zooms up to 3480+ RPM and the load at WOT is at 92-95% or LESS. ………..We shoot for a 10% buffer at 90% , leaving about 45 HP on the table at WOT. Set up like that, the boat will just jump up on plane. Tony

November 18, 2017 at 8:02 pm Hey all, I’m looking for an adapter for my front crank pulled to install my driveshaft for my hydraulics. I need to adapt to a spicer 1280, but don’t need to add any pulleys. Has anyone seen an adapter like this? Thanks John

    • Repower 34' Libby with Cummins QSB 5.9 480

June 14, 2017 at 9:14 am I’m looking to repower my 34′ lobster boat(Libby 34×13). I have a Deere 6068SFM50 rated at 265hp with a ZF280 at 2:1 to a 2″ shaft spinning a 24×25 wheel at the moment. The engine I’m looking at is a very low hour QSB 5.9 at 480hp. I know the engine will fit and my gear and shaft will handle the horsepower. My questions revolve around the exhaust and the power steering pump that is already on the engine. Th…

June 14, 2017 at 10:08 pm Thanks for the reply. With the Deere I can make a little over 19kts at WOT and about 13.5gph, and that’s right were I would like to cruise, so I feel like that wouldn’t be too hard for the 480 to do. I’ve read they can cruise comfortably at 17ish gph. I’d be doing 300-400 hrs per year so not too much. I’ve attached a picture of the engine with the power steering pump attached. I don’t know if this is a Cu…
