    • VDO engine coolant alarm set point

This topic has 5 replies, has 4 voices, and was last updated byClark Leighs 1 year ago

April 10, 2023 at 3:17 pm My 6BT 5.9L engine has the original VDO instrument gauges. Near the end of a 3 hour cruise at 1200 RPMs last week, the engine coolant high temp alarm came on. The VDO gauge was reading around 195ĀŗF. I throttled back to 800 RPMs and reset the alarm. The temp quickly decreased to about 188ĀŗF. The usual engine coolant temp reading while cruising at 1200-1400 RPMs is 185 to 190ĀŗF. The engine coolant high temp alarm has sounded one other time in the …

April 19, 2023 at 7:50 am I have posted my tome below.Ā  Ā  Serviced or not there is still something wrong in your system. Could be a bad hose, an air leak, a clogged water intake,Ā  or somesuch. Read through my tome as your description of the event sounds much like a raw water supply problem.

    • 6BT exhaust elbow & turbo photos

This topic has 4 replies, has 3 voices, and was last updated byTony Athens 2 years ago

March 24, 2022 at 9:25 am The exhaust elbow was removed for inspection on this Cummins 6BT engine with 700 engine hours. There have been no known issues with the turbo. The exhaust turbo blades and housing are covered with a soft, velvety carbon layer without apparent evidence of saltwater intrusion. The turbo blades spin freely without wobble or noise. Inspection of the exhaust elbow and water injection component reveals scaling and several small pits internal but not a…

March 30, 2022 at 4:54 pm So far so good, but 100% totally “doomed to failure” in a most classic way.

July 13, 2021 at 5:38 pm The Cummins engine faceplate contains the following RPM data: Low Idle RPM 700 Rated HP (Metric) 220 at 2600 RPM The results of the VDO gauge reading compared to the laser photo tachometer reading with the vessel in the slip and the transmission in neutral: VDO TACHOMETER (RPM) LASER PHOTO TACHOMETER(RPM) Idle: …

July 14, 2021 at 5:20 pm Your tach readings seem quite accurate……Check at the dock in neutral at 2000, 2500 & WOT no load.. Idle adjustment depends on the “seat of your pants” not a specific number.. 600-750 is the typical range.. Every engine/gear and boat is different as to what is most comfortable.

    • Return fuel line filter

This topic has 5 replies, has 3 voices, and was last updated byDeWayne Enyeart 3 years ago

November 16, 2020 at 7:24 pm I installed Optio fuel flow sensors on the supply and return fuel lines on my Cummins 6BT 5.9-M engine about six months ago. The system has worked as expected until the last cruise when the iPhone app showed the fuel consumption suddenly increasing several fold in a short period of time. The return sensor was sent to Interactio and disassembled. I attempted to attach photos which show metallic and non-metallic debris on the gears. No fuel filter…

    • 6BT – abrupt stop; cranks but no start

This topic has 7 replies, has 4 voices, and was last updated byRob Schepis 4 years ago

August 30, 2019 at 4:39 pm While trolling at idle for salmon 5 days ago, the engine abruptly stopped. The engine cranks but no start. Trouble shooting thus far: 1. Both fuel tanks nearly full 2. No water in the Racor bowls 3. Battery voltage before start attempt: 13.2 4. Voltage at the fuel shutoff solenoid: 10.6 5. Removed & inspected the fuel shutoff solenoid: no obvious damage 6. Bench tested fuel shutoff solenoid with a new 9 volt battery: the plunger retracted pr…

    • 6BT starter removal

This topic has 2 replies, has 3 voices, and was last updated byFireisland1 5 years ago

February 1, 2019 at 11:10 am Two different diesel mechanics have attempted to remove the starter without success. They found the heads of all 3 bolts stripped by a previous installer. Two of the bolts have been removed but the one next to the engine has not been removed even after disassembling the starter. They have presented me with two options for removing the starter: 1. Attempt to cut the starter off the engine 2. Remove the engine from the vessel, if option #1 is not …

February 1, 2019 at 6:27 pm I would assume the bolt is impossible to get to. So here is what I would do. Strip away any hose or H E. Remove the starter piece by piece. When you get down to the mounting base , start cutting, sawall, hp grinder, TNT whatever it takes. To access the bolt. Then cut the head off the bolt and get the base off. After that it is straight forward stud extraction.

    • VDO Boost/Pyro gauge

This topic has 5 replies, has 3 voices, and was last updated byRob Schepis 5 years ago

November 14, 2018 at 11:31 am The Cummins OEM analog marine panel on my trawler has one blank VDO gauge space that I want to use for a combination boost/pyro gauge. The hole size for the ISSPRO SMX Marine Boost/Pyro (EGT) Turbocator Gauge Kit is too large for the VDO gauge space. I have been unable to find this combination in a VDO gauge. Any suggestions? Thanks

November 15, 2018 at 5:31 pm Install a VDO Gear PSI guage at the open location in the Cummins panel and then the SMX boost/pyro unit off to either side.

May 8, 2018 at 2:26 pm A diesel mechanic has recommended using this oil stabilizer in my 6BT 5.9 M 600 hour engine that was built in 2000. I would appreciate comments about the experience of forum members who have used this engine oil additive.

January 24, 2018 at 4:53 pm The attached photos are of the dipstick on a new-to-me trawler with a 6BT 5.9M engine. Someone has scratched the dipstick in 3 places but the original marks are not evident. Any opinions about the accuracy of the scratches? Any suggestions other than buying a new dipstick? Thanks.
