Cummins Marine Diesel Repower Specialists Forums Cummins Marine Engines What parameter runs about 102 degrees?

Got most all of the desired parameters showing correct on a new VV 502 but the manual doesn’t explain very well. I’ve got one parameter that on a normal cruise shows 102, it’s labeled water temp but I know that’s not outside water temp which here is more like maybe 70. <br />can anyone suggest what might normally run about 102 to help me decipher what it could be?

    Ambient Temperature Sensors

When I said the sensors were connected behind the VV displays, they were actually connected to the harness.  I attach a couple of photos that I took when sorting these out.  FYI, that boat had triple Cummins QSC600 engines driving Zeus drives, hence the 3 displays.

David, hmmmm not a bad thought… I suppose right behind the helm panel with all the electronics producing heat, you certainly might see temps in the low 100s…..  the new vessel view 502 and 703s are essentially just a small MFD (Simrad I think) so I don’t know if they would have a sensor in the back.  I was thinking it could be labeled “water temp” incorrectly if I had something set to the wrong NMEA parameter… there’s not much help in the manuals but I’ll keep looking.

    Ambient Air Temperature perhaps?

My last boat had Vessel View displays and each of them had an ambient temperature sensor connected at the rear.  The boat builder left these under the dash which was useless so I ran one to the air intake box for the engine room and ran the other to the centre of the engine room, thus giving me me the temperature of the air going into the engine room and the engine room temperature itself.  They were there so I put them to some use.  The parameter was actually labelled as ‘air temperature’ whereas you are saying yours is labelled ‘water temperature’ so perhaps not!

Sorry should have explained; VV is VesselView; made the controversial upgrade from an old Vessel View Smartcraft to a new V.V. 502 Smartcraft, which takes all available engine parameters and makes them available on NMEA2000 and also puts them up on the 502 display.

We do have coolant Temp already that runs normally at 162 F on our QSC8.3, 500 hp. We also have intake temp and oil pressure showing correctly.

The issue is when you program the new vessel view to look for CAN engine output parameters, some come out labeled incorrectly until you get it figured out.

This one remaining field I asked about starts at say 90 F and by the end of say a 4 hour cruise it might get up to about 112 F… Anyway, still troubleshooting but otherwise have been pretty happy with the overall conversion.

Could also be gear temperature, in F degrees.

It might help if you filled in some info.

Which engine are you talking about specifically?

OK , I see it now.

“VV ”      no real idea.     The only thing I can think of the is the coolant temperature.   102 , if Celsius would convert to 215  degrees F.            To cool for engine oil so most likely coolant.
