    The VDO documents mention yellow and red as the thermocouple wire colors. Also, the range of the gauge is up to 1650 F.

    Both of these would indicate Type K.

    The extension wire is not too critical as long as all the connections are kept at the same temperature. The accuracy will be degraded a bit, but that may not be too important in this application. Trends are probably more important than absolute numbers.

    Disclaimer: I have worked a lot with thermocouples in an industrial laboratory setting, but not as a mechanic or engine specialist.

    Thermocouple type–Saving a few bucks

    The only answer to your ?? will come come a complete spec for the type of thermocouple the VDO gage uses.. A quick peek at the spec sheet did not show the specs.

    A easy Google Search yielded this Cut & Paste:

    Measuring Range…
    Type K = -330Ā°F to +2460Ā°F (-200Ā°C to +1250Ā°C)
    Type J = -40Ā°F to +1382Ā°F (-40Ā°C to +750Ā°C)

    Sensitivity…
    Type K = approximately 41 ĀµV/Ā°C
    Type J = approximately 55 ĀµV/Ā°C
