Hi, new member here. New to us boat, 1991. 32,000# loaded. twin 3208T’ 320hp, Twin Disc MG506 1.98 to 1.
Previous owner mostly ran at low RPMs, 10-11 kts, and only makes 2500 RPM WOT. Prop is 3 blade 26: x 24″. We discovered a couple serious oil leaks in STB engine after purchase, as well as a leaking head. We have re-machined the heads on that engine and replaced head gaskets. One cylinder has a significant score, the rest are ok. The oil leaks are in the lower part of the engine and will require major rebuild like work to get to them. I’m using a quart of oil every 4-6 hours. Eventually we will need to tear into this engine, and most people advise me to do just that and fix it, but I cannot help but wonder about just stopping here and repowering. For this boat/engine combination, what are the most reasonable Cummins options? QSB 9.5? Others?

Approximate cost these days for a total repower like this?

    Thank you

IMO, best option is the Cummins QSB 6.7SL in the 350-420HP range.. But with that said, realistically, you need to thing $150-250 K to do a proper repower , and I have not clue if that is a budget you could work with.

You could also also look at 6BTA 5.9 330/370 Diamonds and probably use you old gears if you work with the right techs–You’d save at least 50K going that direction…………………In general, the more “hands-on” you are, the less $$ you’ll spend regardless of how you go.
