Hi all. I’m swapping out the 10 year old seawater pumps on my QSB 5.9 355s for new SMX pumps. 2 questions: do I need to lubricate or somehow dress the o-rings that seal the pump body to the inlet/oulet elbows? Ā And second, what is the torque spec for the bolts that attach the elbows to the pump body and the pump itself to the bracket?
Any info or hints that anyone can share is greatly appreciated. Or maybe where to find bolt torque specs and pump replacement procedures? Ā Seems pretty straightforward but nothing beats experience. Thanks!
Mike

Marc, I think they would tarnish. I figured they would look better white than brown (or worse?). Maybe clear coat them? Agree that they look great in the raw.
Good luck with the install.

One of my buddies that likes everything “just so” polishes the bare bronze and clear coats

Thx Mike,
I have the single āstretchy ā belt, but I do check them regularly.
Thx for the reassurance.
Was there any reason you painted the pump, cause they look very pretty as raw brass?October 26, 2017 at 8:21 pm #24313Hi Marc.
BTW- I had no issues whatsoever with the pumps after running the boat all season, with just about 1 month left to go (east coast US).
I changed my raw water pump belts when I did the pumps. After a month of use I checked the belt tension and they both needed an adjustment (tightening). My engines use the v belts with the 3 pulleys. Something you should check routinely anyway, as you probably already know.

October 26, 2017 at 7:58 pm #24311Hi Marc.
I was the original poster. Sorry, I should have closed it out with my final result.
It was 100% plug & play. It took less than 3 hours to do both engines. I had pretty easy access to both pumps and I wasn’t exactly In a hurry. It took longer to paint them in my garage than to install them.
Good luck with it! Nothing there to be afraid of.

SMX QSB Pumps = “100% Plug & Play” .. Maybe even easier as we made some improvement to the shaft where the pulley goes to make that part easier..

My guess is it was more of the couch engineer syndrome.
its easy to get carried away in the details when there is no replacement for some common sense and experience in what tight is vs. overnight, distorting, or stripping.

Guaranteed 15 in lbsĀ for a 8mmĀ SS Ā bolt screwed into 85-5-5-5 bronze Ā is either a typo or was written by a true couch engineer…That’s just a tadĀ over Ā “finger tight”………..But thinking about it, those may be 6mm bolts (?) Ā which would put in in the 60-100 in lb range.. ? ………………………… ………To give you a comparison–Typical hose clamp torque is 60 in lbs… Ā Your call..

If you really need to be technical, I just came across the specs in the book…. but just good and tight is fine.
Sea water pump mounting screws 18 ft-lb
Sea water pump inlet/outlet connections 15 in-lb

Thanks much guys. Grease the o-rings andĀ yes, no chance of getting a socket on the mounting bolts. Maybe the elbow bolts? Ā I’ll just hand tighten everything well without bending the flange plate and it should be good to go.Ā

Yup, just as Tony said with some grease to lube the o-rings and the threads of the bolts. Ā As far as tightness you will feel when it is good and tight (but going goofy tight you’d see the corners on the flange plate want to flex in – that’s too tight) and tighten the 4 bolts in increments in a pattern…

“O” rings–yes, coat them with any common grease you have along with putting some on the threaded bolts that hold them in place.. Ā Torque specs–Let’s use “common sense” here as you cannot get a “torque wrench in there any way.. These are 8MM/5/16” bolts.. How about this Ā use a common wrench and make them “hand tight” per that wrench lenght/sized.. Ā Want a number?? Use 120 inch lbs.. Good luck…. Ā Tony Ā Ā Ā Ā
