Hi, I bought a Galéon 420 fly which is on Lake Geneva in Switzerland.the boat dates from 2013, 2x Cummins QSB5.9 425hp engine I want to clarify that I am almost the only boat to be equipped with cummins on our lake

The engine only have 470 hours, the previous owner only sailed 2 weeks a year in Geneva elsewhere the rest of the time
Unfortunately the engine stalls after my first outing.😭 In full navigation at 2500 rpm

I checked the fuel filter there is no water.

The prefilter was really very very dirty, is it possible that it is blocking the arrival of diesel in order to cause the engine to stall at idle after 30 seconds?

I took the boat out and changed the hydrolube rings to check the axle, everything is OK on this side. It was very hard but after the change it runs very well.

What do you advise me to do step by step to solve this engine stalling problem

Tks lot again for your help, 🙏
    Regards
    John

I do not use the fuel additive and have no “real world” experience to offer.

As to bleeding the air: https://www.sbmar.com/community/topic/bleeding-fuel-system-on-a-qsb-5-9/

    Hi Rob,

Thank you very much for your answer first.

I would change the last chance (on-engine) filter. Be sure to use a genuine Fleetguard FF5488. (Do Not PreFill)

I have this filter reference now & also 2 for spares.
Last weekend I took out the filter to check if there was water and there was none, it was clean, however I am used to when I put it back always filled with the Diesel on my old boat.
(According to your advice, when I go to change it I leave it empty without Diesel at all correct)? Should I leave it blank whenever I need to check it in the future too? Tks

Clean and overhaul that Racor. Install a new 10 micron filter and a vacuum gauge on it.

Perfect that’s what I did today with the Parker 900MA , I just ad a purge valve for future needs, Racor Rk 19492, the vacuum gauge model I just have to calculate the place if I can put it on top or not (keep you update with picture tomorow)

Properly bleed the system using the IN and OUT screws.

Do you have a video or can I buy 1h of support so as not to make mistakes during this & future manipulations I will need ?

With that little use the boat has seen, I am sure your tanks are ugly inside and way more than that Racor can deal with. As long as it’s a 900 or better (not a 500 series) you need to install a a 30 micron bulk separator ahead of it or remove & sell the Racor and go with an SMX double/double kit.

As I have the 900MA model tell you about this article to put in front correct?

    https://www.sbmar.com/product/2-heavy-duty-bulk-separator-kit-fs1218/

I was also thinking of putting this product, which is one of the best found in Europe, in the tank in order to stop the proliferation of bacteria.

Marine Diesel Protect : In dosage 1:200, to stop the growth of the bacterial https://www.liqui-moly.com/en/marine-diesel-schutz-p003646.html#25000

    What do you think ?

Read these articles on filtration, etc.:

    Done

Tks lot again for your help

    QSB 5.9 On-engine Filters

The fuel filter shown here is what is sometimes referred to as the “last chance” fuel filter. IMO, one should never send any fuel too it that has not already gone thru two filters before it–Ideally a 20-40 high capacity MIC primary and a 5-10 mic secondary ( both drainable) – Hence the term “Multistage Fueltration”

Hi John, I just bought a Galeon 420 here in Mallorca as well with the Cummins 5.9’s.

Great bit of kit but neglected and just happen to be going through the fuel system as well.

I’m pretty new to boat maintenance, brewing background though so used to cleaning.

How much of the liqui moly are you putting in each tank?

It says it has a 1:200 ratio for pre-infected tank so I’m thinking to add 1 litre to each tank when they’ve got 200 in each and leave it in there for overnight, then take her out to swill the fuel around the tank for a bit, leave her again for a few days to sit and then fill back up again.

Though thinking about it might be better to buy 2 or 3 litres per side with the tanks fuller.

I read the product instructions on their website and it doesn’t give a lot away!

    Thanks,

    Jules

For your vac gauge, replace the T handle you have now with the following. It’s pretty straightforward.

SMX RACOR Drag Pointer Vacuum Gauge Kit here on SBMAR

The Liquid Moly is fine. Use that or another diesel biocide like it religiously. We use items like Biobor.

When people get bad fuel or have it contaminated, it’s not unusual for them to roll through many pre filter filter elements until issue solved.

For bleeding in and out… Google this “sbmar bleeding air fuel” and you’ll see title Bleeding Air from your QSB Fuel System. That should help.

Come back with any updates/questions and good luck
