I’ve got a trawler with twin Cummins QSC 8.3 engines running DieselView with instruments at both helms.  I now have a problem with the port engine DieselView instrument (or at least that is where I am seeing the issue).  When I enable power to the port engine using the rocker switch at the salon panel, the DieselView instrument turns on for a few seconds and then turns off.  Subsequent attempts at turning the rocker switch off and then on doesn’t correct the issue and the DieselView does not come back on at all with two exceptions.  The 2 times I managed to get it to work for at least a few seconds is my first attempt of the day each of the last two times I was on the boat.  The last time, DieselView remained on long enough for me to start the engine.  It ran for a few seconds then the DieselView turned off and the engine died.  A few things I determined:

    • The indicator light on the carling contura rocker switch is on only when the DieselView comes up.  Once the DieselView turns off, the indicator light turns off.
    • I have an extra rocker switch that I installed and tested but I get the same result.
    • I checked the connection on the back of the DieselView and it looks fine and secure to my untrained eye.  I disconnected and reconnected and didn’t notice any issues.
    • The port engine has two DieselView instruments, one at each helm.  They are both behaving the same way making me think it isn’t the instruments.

I am not sure what pictures would help but I can take some if it does help. I’ve got a Cummins mechanic that can look at it in 3 weeks.  But I’d like to dig further into this problem if possible.   What can I check next? Thanks, Mark Rinkelm/v Positive LatitudeMainship 43

I may have found the issue.  I found the following post, which helped a lot: https://www.sbmar.com/community/topic/qsm-11-mysterious-shutdowns/

I found the same 24 to 12v regulator the post’s author mentioned and I test 24v going in, but not 12v coming out.  I’ve got a converter I will test to confirm the issue.

sbmar sells this converter as a replacement:

SMX DC/DC 24V to 12V 35A Voltage Converter, Regulator (SmartCraft v1.0) Is this correct?  It seems pricey at almost $1,400.  Other than price and the cables what makes this replacement the best option?

    Thanks,
