    Hello,

I am considering purchasing a boat with Cummins 5.9 engines and I’m looking for recommendations for a reputable mechanic to perform an inspection of the engines and give their opinion of condition and needed maintenance/repairs. Hopefully close to Old Saybrook Conn. to keep their travel time to a minimum.

    Thanks in advance,

    Tim

No love whatsoever, what a shame.Ā  This engine room is going to take lots of TLC to get it ship-shape.Ā  Hopefully you are DIY guy who will have a passion for this type of work? Hopefully you are not going to rely on others?Ā  This is a good DIY engine room that will keep you busy and be quite rewarding to bring back to where it should be cosmetically and to get the gremlins out of it.Ā  The good job you did with these pics makes me think you are not afraid of a few bloody knuckles.

Some observations from the Engine Room folder numbered to correspond to the specific photo:

    (2) Sherwood pump (time bomb) pump with cover showing overheated impeller

    (84)(7)(26) fuel leak

(8)(18)(19)(33)(34) brown turbo paint indicates running at high load

    (14) old gear cooler without zinc ports

    (23)(24) shaft packing leaking

    (48)(50) old fuel cooler

(13)(69) oil slobber from turbo (address CCV system and engine room ventilation)

    (78) seawater hose cracked

    (82) heavy rust at oil fitting at combo block

    And from the Gen/Misc folder:

    (4) heavy rust at engine mount and electrical connectionsĀ

    (7) are the float switch and pump screwed directly into the hull?Ā  That is an opening for water intrusion.Ā  Cored hull below the waterline?

    Remote On-Line Survey

What not try this–A couple hours of your time will yield results that you will not get from any “Aveage Joe” surveyor that is mostly concerned with oil analysis than,Ā  IMO,Ā  are the least of the things that really matter.Ā

    Plus, the $$ is right-ZERO

Download this folder and send me the the same of the boats engine room you are looking at– Between my eyes and Rob S’s, we’ll tell you what you need to know for now as whether you want to go to “step two”.. Ā  Ā
