    Hi Guys,

I just recently purchased a Detroit Diesel 4-53 Natural for a Dyer 29. Does anyone know how much horsepower I can get out of it if I turbo it?

    Thanks,

    Pat

I have “seen” 4-53’s with turbos but I doubt Detroit did it.. Probably aftermarket like J&T or ??

Yeah I understand all of that Tony. I appreciate your reply. I plan on rebuilding the entire engine anyway so I’ll have the whole engine apart. Did Detroit make a 4-53T Marine setup? Is a turbo available for the jacket water cooled exhaust manifold?

    Thanks,

    Pat

A turbo in itself WILL NOT increase the HP–You’ll need new injectors and timing changes, possibly an aftercooler, etc.. The right “hot-rodding” could probably get you 200+ HP at 2800+ RPM.. How long the engine would stay in one piece is another question.
