Clinton RowleyParticipantBrand New Sherwood pump is leaking at the shaft seal. Is this normal? Does it need a “break in” I’m assuming no.
Any Feedback asap would be helpful.Have pics but don’t know how to post from phone.

August 23, 2021 at 4:27 pm #119839Clinton, see if you can get me your email. I have tried but can’t get the site here to work. I would rather email because the info is a lot.

Clinton RowleyParticipantUpdate:
This morning I capped the inlet and connected 4′ PVC pipe on the outlet and filled it with water. 4′ head water = almost 2psi. Shaft seal is leaking between seal and housing, not the shaft.
I spoke with Dan at Depco, he was very knowledgeable and helpful. Dan’s thinks it was improper seal installation at the factory, rubber folded on install. I’ll be installing a Depco seal and then run it.
Front mount pump on the “to do” list.

Tony,
Just FYI…..When you visit your on line store and go to seawater pumps, the first choice in the top left is the Sherwood 1730. It’s naturally where your eyes go first and it’s $200 less than the SMX 1730 sitting next to it.
Luckily the Sherwood is “out of stock”.
Clicking on the SMX choice allows you to read about how bad the Sherwood pumps are and helps you understand why you should get off your wallet and get the SMX.
Click on the Sherwood and it doesn’t say anything. , good or bad.
It might be helpful to add this quality info when clicking on the Sherwood option?
Or maybe just leave as “out of stock” forever and stick them in the bottom right corner???? LOL!

Mark has very precise drawings and parts required to put this together, he put a lot of work into the modifications, and its bulletproof.Prior to changing mine over to front mounted pumps I spoke to one of the guys at Depco about the Sherwoods,he said when they overhauled them they put much higher quality bearings in them and a different seal.
He also said they only had several new shafts in stock and at that time and couldn’t source anymore.

Cummins 4BTA 3.9 Seawater Pump
The pump is proprietary to Cummins but is made by Sherwood/Hypro ??….Researching Sherwood seawater pump warranty will just run you in circles………
IMO, I’d think the manufacturer should stand behind the pump, but at this point I have no clue other that I am just a “middle man” , can offer zero value to the pump, AND do not think I am going to sell them any more………………………………. They are TOTAL JUNK..
August 22, 2021 at 3:44 pm #119765Clinton if you ever want to front mount a pump let me know, I have lots of info.

Clinton RowleyParticipantMake that 3. I got mine from sbmar in June.
I installed it Aug 7.What do you recommend I do to get my boat going?
Deal with Cummins for warranty?
Send it to Depco in Florida for a new seal?
Aquire a seal and install myself?I have room to go belt drive in front of the motor like Mark Pioneered…but that custom work will take me some time.
I removed the pump this morning.

That last 2 new Sherwood 4BTA pumps I purchased and sold both leaked within the first few days of use. They are total crap. I would not stand behind them————–I told the purchaser that this was a “Sherwood warranty issue” .. He went ballistic. ….
