    removal of 3rd starter bolt

Agee with use of a long 3/8 extension +12mm socket. The starter I’m changing is on the outboard side and almost impossible to get to… Looks like a wiring harness is blocking me from getting extension/socket to the 3rd bolt… Harness may be going to solenoid below the starter. May have to move harness but your input confirms what I though… May need a little person to get on the outboard side of engine….

I have the same engine and have done this job twice in the past 6 months. You dont need to remove the oil filter, just get a 12mm 12 point socket for a 3/8 ratchet and a long extension to access the 3rd bolt. You need to work the ratched between the starter and the filter, in that gap.. I did this with the old style starter which is bigger and worked. The new style starter is much easier since its smaller.

If your engine looks like this one here , I would remove that filter , use a ratchet with an extension to access that last bolt . I just did a starter on my 5.9 and my back bolt is up top on the inside . Ā

If you have a little time, like a week or so, I can ask my trusted mechanic.Ā  I ordered a starter for my Strbd 480CE from sbmar last week.Ā  It arrives this week and then he is going to do the work while we are away visiting my parents in Western NY.Ā  I can ask him what his secret sauce is if you can wait that long?Ā  If not I am sure someone will chime in.
