I’ve been chasing an oil leak on my 6BTA – 330 for quite some time and finally tracked it down to the inner gear cover on the front of the engine. I can see where the gasket tore and worked it’s way out under the water pump.

Before I get into it. Has anyone here had any luck replacing that gasket. I know the pump gear needs to be removed as well as the cam gear both of which are pressed on. The cam gear looks like it will be hell to reinstall since I won’t be able to press it, in the boat.

Let me know if anyone has any advice before I get into it.

    Thanks
    Vic

Here is the pages from my Cummins manual. They say 350 degrees. Just dont go over 400, use a laser thermometer to be sure.

It will be a bear of a job but it can be done.

I broke a camshaft on a B series (dont ask me how, it still makes me angry talking about it…) and we had to remove the gear and install on the new cam.

The gear can be removed with a 3 jaw puller. Heating it up “can” help if you cant get it to pop. If you heat it up be very careful and spread the heat evenly across the gear hub while there is tension on the puller and keep loading it up till it pops.

The gear “needs” to be heated up to go back onto the cam. If you are doing this in the boat then I would suggest using a toaster oven to heat the gear up to about 375 degrees and using oven mits quickly and I mean quickly to install the gear back in place. The gear loses heat very fast so you need to have it heated closely to where you are working.

When I did it I was doing it on the bench so it was easier. I dont think it presses back on, it is heated up and should slide on. I did it over 10 years ago so my memory could be off but I think that was how I did it.

6BTA ā€“ Inner gear cover gasket replacement

U-tube may have some videos on thisā€“All the 12 valve Dodge engines are basically the same.

    Thanks Tony.

I’ve been combing YouTube and found a few. Was curious to see if anyone here had a success story. I started disassembly. I’ll update the thread as I progress.
