September 11, 2022 at 1:44 pm This year has troubled me… See below.  Port engine has been burning more fuel (as much as 2GPH) depending on speed all season.   Overall GPH has increased as the season went on… Which is typical; bottom growth, higher ambient temperatures, humidity, etc. Aug 1st – Cleaned the bottom and running gear. Prop shop checked the props and said a couple blades were bent over slightly. They thought the yard may have done it by block…

April 25, 2023 at 3:34 pm So the boat was run again and these are my EGTs.  Again, these are QSM-11 715hp in a 4700 Tiara Sovran.    We are seeing less than 1,000deg at all rpm’s.  So I assume if I’m running under 1,000 at my cruising speeds of 2,000-2,100 my manifolds and turbos should be out of the danger zone?

    • Priming a QSM11 after Fuel Filter Change

This topic has 2 replies, has 3 voices, and was last updated byRichard Lynch 2 years ago

December 20, 2021 at 11:57 am I read in another thread that the QSM11 would self-prime after changing fuel filters. I changed the racor and then filled that bowl with diesel fuel but when I changed the fuel filers mounted to the engine I did not fill them with fuel as I did not want to contaminate them. How long do I need to turn the ignition on for them to be primed before starting?

February 21, 2022 at 7:56 pm I have no problem changing the Racor filters without filling them, they fill from gravity.  The on-engine filters have to be manually filled prior to re-installing in my boat. That does the trick though.

August 12, 2021 at 8:31 am Hello.I am looking at a 2002 Sea Ray 48 Sedan tonight and I am trying to do some research as far as things that I should specifically look for around the engines. I am in Ontario Canada and it is very hard to find Cummins or marine technicians that know diesel marine super well. I have always done all my own maintenance and like to go the extra mile. Oil samples every year, fresh impellors etc. Any tips or list of things I should look for would…

September 9, 2021 at 6:38 pm I don’t think it is reasonable for the Sea Ray 480, 500 or 52DB Sedan Bridge with a QSM11 670HP to tune the props enough to get 20GPH at 2100RPM.

    • QSM-11 engine model confusion

This topic has 13 replies, has 4 voices, and was last updated bySteve Lewis 3 years ago

August 19, 2020 at 1:47 pm I have been looking online at several Searay boats that have QSM-11 engines. Some of the descriptions say they are 616HP and others say that they are 660HP. I cannot figure out exactly which engines they are to look at the performance charts as none of the listed HP ratings match. Can someone enlighten me as to which models they might be?

Regardless of what you have read and Cummins has claimed to do as to “upgrades”, the issue persists today. January 7, 2020 at 8:31 pm Seems there are a number of us QSM folks with Dry Exhausts… No fix seems available to me after all the reading I have found. Question 1 – What does Cummins suggest after all of these years of common issues with the dry exhausts? Question 2 – I have seen some threads on a Wet Exhaust Conversion. Is there hope for a resonable conversion? Thank you for your responses

August 21, 2019 at 11:33 pm During a routine valve adjustment on both engines our mechanic found surface rust on the valves for both engines. He cleaned them both up and suggested we send the oil out for testing in 30 hours or so. Our current oil samples show clean however the previous owner had recently changed the oil (within 10 hours) so we know that probably is not a good indicator. Thoughts? Suggestions?
