August 13, 2020 at 3:53 am I have a 1996 6BTA Cummins engine. I am loosing antifreeze when running. there are no visible external leaks. Initially my mechanic indicated that my heat exchanger was leaking. He claimed that he saw antifreeze and sea water coming out of the zinc location on the HE after removing the bolt. I removed it and had it professionally serviced and tested. According to the shop there were no leaks. My mechanic is still insisting that it is l…

He claims he saw coolant leaking from the heat exchanger zinc while the engine was running and zinc removed. Either something got lost in the telling of the tale, or that was a very messy observation. Raw cooling water would have been spraying out of the zinc opening at a good rate. Coolant loss, at say 1 gallon per hour, would be dwarfed by seawater flow at seve…

February 12, 2020 at 8:39 am I have been away from this forum for a while, but since I am now helping a friend get his new to him Cummins powered trawler in shape for a 900 mile trip back home, I thought I would reintroduce myself and follow the forum more closely. The boat and engines I am working with is a 42′ Jefferson aft cabin powered by twin Cummins 6BT 210 hp engines. The boat is a 1987 model. Want to replace impeller. #1 Disconnect upper and lower hose. #2 Do I un-bolt entire unit from gear train and then remove the neck transition piece to replace impeller? No typical cover plate. #3 Then lash the gears back when replacing, all done?…

August 11, 2019 at 12:24 pm Can anyone supply information on these aftercoolers? Mounted to 5.9 6BTA model year 1992. Looking the cooler over I see no access ports for the core. I pulled the charge air outlet (on top) and can view the core. The cases are welded together. Thanks in advance.
