6 LP 315 Yanmar, twins, when engines are cold will start and shutdown right away, when boat is run for a while they will stay running even after the key is turned off, rather random in nature, but lasting longer over time, could be anything from 3 minutes to 15 minutes and either port of starboard. Ā Turned power to engines off and no affect also. Ā Are the stop solenoids easy to get too – to replace?Ā

Dan, Ā perhaps different model Yanmars with different 12 V systems are configured differently but either way with a voltmeter or test light at the solenoid you will “see” if there is switched 12 V at the solenoid upon Ā start up or at shut down. Ā  If you see no effect at the solenoid (never voltage or always voltage) then you know it is an electrical communication thing…if things check out electrically then perhaps you have a sticky mechanism which it sounds like Matt had…

Matthew, thanks for sharing your experience, good information to go on this weekend of testing.

    GREAT FORUM, thank you TONY!

I had a similar issue with my 6LP in the past when shutting off the key would not stop the engine.Ā I tapped the solenoid when it was still running after shutting off the key and the engine stopped right away. A few times of doing this it proved to me there was something stuck in it.Ā  I cant say I waited as long as 15 min to see if it would shut on its own but think it would have with the vibrations.

Funny thing is I bought a new one to install but the problem walked. Not sure if a bit of dirt moved, etc… it has not happened again.

    Random times for delayed shutdown

Thank you for the quick response and the pictures, hard to tell from service manual where the stop solinoid was.

No for a while only the port engine had an issue, then over time starboard also had delayed shutdown issues as well, time also varies, one time 5 minutes another time could be as much as 15 before shutting off.Ā

Will check voltage, I was under the impression the 6LP (different most Yanmars) had power off for shutdown, but happy to test.

    Again thank you!!

Did both engines start having the “no shut down” issue at the same time?

Yanmar shutoff solenoids are energized to shut down – when you kill her at the helm it activates a relay (located on the engine next to the air cleaner) which energizes the shutoff solenoid. Ā At the moment you kill the engine at the helm have a voltmeter or 12V test light setup at the solenoid so you can see if it is getting power from the relay.

Here’s a pic of the solenoid at the inj pump and the relay within the harness.
