Need help, just purchased a tiara 35 Open with dual 370 6bta. Stb RPM gauge is dead some times and erratic other times. The boat came with single lever sync, I can see both mechanical rpm cables go the the sync box, boat has after market alternator regulator. Any pointer on where to start.

Also, previous care taker says the port engine is consuming oil, a mechanic had ā€œrepairedā€ turbo seals as they thought it was dripping oil into the exhaust. Dip stick level dropped 1/8ā€ from full after a 3 hour trip to new homeport. One thing I noticed is engine is cooling quickly at idle when hot after a trip. A 3 min idle drops the temp from 183 deg to 100 deg, just purchased 165 new term to take care of that. BTW no smoke at running spped. Any hints?

    Thanks

    Tony,
Same issue and engines, just port tach. Similar boat, Pursuit. Just replaced the alternator but it did not fix the tach. Would work after planning at 2000 to 2200 and be fine, than sometimes work at idle when hot. Sounds like time to replace the magnetic pickup?

This looks like the link https://www.sbmar.com/articles/install-magnetic-pickup-drive-tachometer/

    Thanks

Checked the oil capacity today and the marks are good.

I guess next step is to remove the exhaust piping and check the turbo. The turbos where done recently but maybe they where not refurbished right.

Synchronizers——————-Good Old fashioned well designed Glendinning “Monkey Motion” mechanical syncs.. A true genius figured this system out about 40 yrs ago.. They have nothing to do with the erratic tachs.

Tachs–Read up the “magnetic pick-ups” for your tach issue.. They need to be pulled, cleaned and reset.. Plenty of stuff on this website..

Oil Consumption— Read up on OIL PAN Capacities and do what needs to be done first…You have very shallow oil pans to where the connecting rods “dip the oil” especially when up on plane / or above 2200 RPM or so.. Some old couch engineer was involved in this about 1989 when they decided to make a “low profile marine oil pan”.

Learn to use WD-40 and some elbow grease where you see rust and corrosion, & also learn “Tony’s Tips”–It’s all there.

Tony thanks for the reply, the synchronizer is working perfectly to my understanding. I hear both engine at similar RPM and the bad gauge does jump around where the rpm should be.

    Im adding pics from today.

Let’s ID the Sync Box/type……………..Look for a LOGO or something

Let’s “see” the tachs — front & back view..

Does the “sync” system seem to work?

This may not be ( most likely) an easy sort-out thing, so be prepared unless you are a super hands-on guy with lots of free time to “learn” what you bought.
