    I’m servicing my two ZF-80A transmissions with new Seaboard coolers/hoses/filters and want to replace my rusted steel hydraulic fittings on the top of the transmission.  Can I use Stainless hydraulic fittings or should I stick with Steel?  The ZF casting is aluminum so I don’t want to induce any corrosion.  Sbmar sells stainless fittings but they don’t specifically say for transmission use.  Just wanted your take..

    Generally unless the metals, in your case steel or SS in contact with an aluminum casting should not suffer any corrosion   UNLESS the parts are being wetted with salt water.    That may produce some corrosion but it will be slow to develop.

     

    I suggest you cover the stuffing boxes with an old ,small fender  you can cut to produce a cover.   THe cover will stop the spray from the spinning shaft from being flung around and travelling which will cause rusting of parts nearby.

    Cut the fender ears off leaving a hole big enough for the shaft to go through.  Cut the fender in half  so there are two roughly equal lengths. Split each piece lengthwise so now you have a tube that can be opened.

    Wrap it over the stuffing box  so the end hole extends an inch or two beyond the box itself and covers shaft entry to the stuff box.    Secure the fender piece to the stuffing box. Tie wraps can be used OR I use a large Tridon worm gear clamp only lightly snugged to ensure it stays put.     I keep the nut driver, usually 5/16, close by as I finally got fed up searching for it in the tool boxes.        Hang it from a string and cup hook or make a wee bracket for it to hang in nearby.    

     Before I forget the down facing split should be cut so the  split  is slightly open  [ 1/8 to 1/4″ wide] so the caught water will drop into the bilge.     Or it could go into a catch pan.

    Yes,  you can use SS or brass–ALL “ATF TRANSMISSIONS” of this general style (Hurth / ZF 45-85 series)  have an under 20 PSI oil cooler circuit. You can even  use high quality A1 fuel line with hose barbs and hose clamps  ( safely) with these gears, although it would not be very kosher.
