    Bucket List II

I have Sherwoods Raw Water Pumps on both my 6CTA8.3 Cummins. I’m planning on proactively upgrading to the SMX 1730 pumps. Never having done this particular job before, I see that it is gear drive. My question is, do I have to drain the oil first in order to change them out?

    Agree with David.
The oil drains out of the “gear case” when the engine is off.
The oil is engine oil, drains into the oil pan.
    Hope this helps.

I have also done the upgrade, easy.

No you do not have to drain the oil.
