    Hi SB crew

I have a Riviera 4000 offshore express on Gold Coast, Queensland which features 2 x 1997 6CTA8.3 aka C450 Diamond Series with around 1000 hours on the tachourmeters. The other morning I found a bolt in the engine room and it is from the turbo where the exhaust bolts to the turbo.

Please refer attached photos. Recent running was not hard and last couple of runs before this discovery we were only doing a leisurely 10 knots or 1100rpm.

My question is has anyone got any tips on how to remove the bolt and what parts will I need before starting on this repair? Looks like we should replace all of the bolts in both turbos… and my fear is that other bolts may shear when I attempt to remove them.

    Thanks for your help!

    Regards

    Graphite vs steel gasket

is there a preference of steel vs graphite gaskets for the turbo to elbow joint? Dry or use hi-temp sealant? If so what brand/kind? Any anti seize on bolts?

You will need to remove the remaining bolts and pull the elbow off the turbo.  At that point there may be enough of the broken bolt left that vise grips could grab it or it will need to be ground and drilled out.  Many days/nights of soaking the remaining bolts with a penetrant and the use of a high quality 6 point box end wrench tapped with a hammer will help.  Heat helps as well.

You really need to take it all apart for inspection as there is likely more there that needs addressing here than a broken bolt.  How is performance/boost?  Black smoke?
