17 year old boat, exhaust riser is pitted I’m told. The port side has been replaced. Also told my turbo needs looked at. It seeps a little oil at high rpms.

So I’m wondering how tough it is to remove these 2 things.

Things to do to prepare for removal.

I’ve read some nuts/bolts may be stuck so once off I may need to cut them? Any tips and advice is appreciated.

    Ken,

Your pictures helped a lot……Looks to me that very little maintenance has taken place inside your engine room in many many years and that working on it now will be a very an un-friendly task.. It will not be easy, is about the best way to tell you..

Cables & wires– Each vessel is different

Riser repair–Probably not–It would have to be inspected 1st

Water spraying out?? Ā You are kidding, right?

    Any other tips or advice?

I was urged to post pictures but it appears the pictures didn’t help anything in regards to advice.

Where is it best to drain coolant?

Are the hoses stubborn and I should use a heatgun?

should i soak anything with penetrating oil before hand?

Are there any cables or wires to deal with?

Is it straight forward, I just undo a few thing and it comes right out?

Can an exhaust riser even be repaired?

At high RPMs should I see water spraying out of it or in the bilge if it truly is bad?

To answer your question – yes it can be removed as a turbo/riser “unit” but will be bulky and heavy so have another set of hands. Ā As far as fluids you will need to drop the coolant..

Here’s the only pictures I have on hand at the moment. The last one is the port side which has been replaced (by DeAngelo)

I’ve taken the boat up to 2800+ RPMs and didn’t see any spray or oil seeping from this starboard side but in the survey they did notice some light smoking around the turbo. I’m assuming the turbo needs rebuilt and exhaust riser needs redone. I’m hoping for just a repair ….??

But my question today is how difficult it is to take this off. I believe I take the riser and turbo off as one unit then worry about getting them apart. Is that correct?

Is it just some hoses and a few nuts/bolts or do I need to worry about oil spilling and any other tips I’d appreciate. Once I have it off I will post more pictures of the aftermath.

Yes, for sure post some good pics. Ā In the meantime put a high quality “6-point” 10mm box end wrench and a can of spray penetrant on your Christmas List..

Ken, as usual – can you post a few pictures so we can see what we’re dealing with? It will help us to at least guide you through the initial removal process of the components…

Assessing what we discover will be an entirely different process in and of itself…
