kipbconnerParticipantAny thoughts on whether there is any difference in the maintenance interval of the vertical 6.7 aftercooler, vs, the horizontal 5.9 aftercooler?
In particular the maintenance I’m referring to is pulling it apart, cleaning, lubing, new prints, gaskets, etc.
Thanks for your thoughts.

Let’s do it this way…Post a serial number and I’ll log in to QSOL as if I had that engine.. Let me see what I can download for that exact engine.

QSM11 Aftercooler Maintenance
Steve,
OFFICIAL ?
That would depend on a few things as Cummins has been all over the place on this topic since the QSM11 was released as a marine engine in 1999.
Plus, there a two totally different aftercooler designs for this engine, The unit used in the High HP Dry QSM’s, and the unit used on the low HP WET QSM11’s.
Be specific and I’ll see what I can find in print.
Regardless, IMO this is ONE component the should be application specific as Cummins never had a clue from Day one on hold they shuld be maintains–All you have to do is what what they put in then then, vs. as time passed, and and now.

Service intervals
Just serviced my after coolers after 4 years of use.I think the answer to your question is that it depends. If in fresh water or salt. Are the engines fresh water flushed. If in salt water is it in for a full year or seasonal. Is it in an area like Florida or the northeast. My after coolers were fine after 4 years.I do not fresh water flush but I consider the engines to be fresh water flushed for 2 out of the 4 years because the boat is on the hard here in the northeast.I think this interval will work for me the way I operate but may not work for you due to your situation.Bill

kipbconnerParticipantAftercooler service interval
I did put mine on the bench 1 year ago. All was satisfactory.
My question is: Now what should the service interval be?
Thanks.

On my new ReCon QSB 5.9 480, I removed nd re-greased the cooler from the factory.
There was a “smidgen” of greenish grease on the factory Orings…the unit is greased up nicely now !December 11, 2020 at 6:21 pm #107685
kipbconnerParticipantThank you Tony. I did pull mine and had it serviced. No issues.
The new vessel with original aftercooler had the plastic end bells and leaked externally. Cummins mechanics serviced it under warranty, for the first owner. I believe it was replaced. My mechanic said it appeared to have been lubed up well.
The replacement aftercooler was 2-3 years old when I serviced it, now it’s been 1 year since last service. Just wondering the frequency/period I should repeat. Mechanic advised 3 year intervals. Thanks for any insight.

All mixed metal seawater cooled aftercoolers have the same inherent issues–usually dry assembled at the factory when new, and maintenance guidelines intervals and “how to” that leaves lots of room for improvement..
As to the vertical B & C / QSL9 aftercooler vs. the horizontal coolers the the QSB 6.7 & QSC, both have the same basic issues–major corrosion points due to moisture migration across/ near the o-rings. From what I have seen, 1st hand, at least in this period in the 6.7’s history, I’d say they require more effort to keep them in pristine condition.. I have plenty of the vertical units in our area with well over 25 yrs on them & some with over 30000 hours of use and are still in perfect working condition– But then again they have been taken care of properly since DAY 1
I’d be pulling yours and putting it on the bench..
