Hello, I am looking to buy a boat with 2 QSB6.7 305 HP. this is a year model 2014. Seller seems honest and reliable and has the maintenance record of the boat since it had 7 hrs on. In an oil analysis for boat motors, the copper came up high. Surveyor advise to look for another boat since this one will need motors overhaul. I invested quite some time, effort, and money on this boat and it is in a really good shape except this. The owner was so confident in his boat, he didn’t change oil prior to the survey. So, here are the details and maybe the experts can shed more light on this: Current Hrs: 600. Oil changed at: 6/27/21, at 540 Hrs, 15W40 Rottela T4 used. Copper PPM came at 264 on one engine with this explanation: Trace metal copper critical and excessive… Copper PPM on the opposite engine at 99 with this explanation: Trace metal copper moderately high… Does this tells anybody anything? Where did copper come from on those engines?

Nothing wrong with a wee bit of old oil being flushed back into the crankcase with the new oil.Ā  In almost all oil changes not all old oil is removed so there is always a small amount remaining.

The question is was theĀ  pump used to fill the sample bottlesĀ  Ā and more importantly does the the pump use bronze gears.Ā

Best is to get an independent sampling setup and resample.Ā  Ā  Samples can be contaminated very easily.

Yes, the boat is equipped with Reverso pump. The owner use it to drain old oil and pump back fresh oil which leaves some residue of old oil in the outlet/inlet hose. The oil filling cap on the motor is close to the deck and is a pain to fill up from the top.

Copper can be leached from coolers such as the oil cooler.

Another place is if an oil change system was used and the pump has bronze gears, some do. Find out.

If the oil change system was used then take another sample but do not use the oil change system.

    Just a suggestion.
