On a QSC after an on engine filter change I have heard two ways to bleed fuel and prime engine.

    1. Open bleed screw on top,of filter housing and cycle key until fuel comes out. Reference http://www.sbmar.com/articles/how-to-bleed-fuel-on-a-cummins-qsl-9-qsc-8-3/

    2. Simply cycle key on and off a few time to allow the pump to push fuel through.

    So what’s the proper way?

It’s not what is proper or not proper. It’s as matter of getting it to bleed easily..

    1) Changing just the on-engine filter–Loosen just the outlet screw to allow air to escape thru the threads.

    2) If changing  filters OFF the engine, then remove the IN-Screw on that filter head.

By far the easiest way for both is to install a “squeeze bulb” priming system..  1-3 minutes for all vs. 15-30 minutes the “Cummins Book way”
