    I could use some help…. (2004 Cummins 6CTAs 480 Diamonds – 1100 hours)

One of my engines is surging on startup – fluctuating between 650-750 RPMs for about 10 minutes until its warmed up.
I’ve heard of the infamous problem with these engines requiring the fuel injection pump to be rebuilt, but from the sound of things, that needs to be done on engines that are surging all the time….. Im baffled by the fact that my problem stops once its warmed up.

I’ve read about adjusting the “thing” on the pump – however Im hesitant to mess with it considering the engine runs great once warm.

My initial thought was air leakage somewhere in the fuel system that is sealing itself up once hot; but I’ve been unable to identify a leak or loose connection anywhere.

Thoughts / Advice would be greatly appreciated – this problem is driving me insane.

    Resolution?

I know this is an old thread but I am curious what the fix was?

#1—-Don’t warm your engine up in neutral–That’s been a no-no in my book for over 30 years.. Start your engines, do your pre-checks as yo do, get the boat in gear and out of the slip..The engine NEEDS TO SEE a light loads from idle to 1400 RPM as soon as possible.. Way better for the engine.

#2— Get 250 W oil pan heaters, install them and run them 24-7 when at the dock

3# Look at the attached picture.. I do not have one of your pump but need a few could really goods ones to help.. Same general view.. Clear & in focus.. I especially need to see the rear side of the pump that is obscured by the air pipe leading up from the aftercooler..
