    Good morning, Seaboard Marine,

I have twin Cummins 6BTA 5.9 M3 engines. (B5.9 M330, Cummins 330 HP M10TA). Their build date is February 2004 and would have been installed into my boat (Alaska 45 sedan cruiser, semi displacement vessel, privately owned used as a pleasure vessel), when built in 2004/5. Their serial numbers are Port 46368002 and Starboard 46371833.

Current engine hours are approximately 2200 each.

In July 2018 I purchased two SMX-1730 raw water pumps to replace the factory original. (Spacer plates were also fitted at that time), These have been in use now for 5+ years and 1000 hours. The impellors have been routinely replaced as follows: July 2020 and 357 hours running time and 2 years

I also retained one of the original Sherwood pumps as a spare in case of emergency.

The old impellors were always in good condition such that some were retained as spares. When the impellors were last changed the cover plates were starting to show signs of some wear, not bad, but some wear. Currently neither pump show any external signs of wear or leakage.

Ā The boat is always in the water (except for itā€™s annual lift out and anti-foul); itā€™s salt water and temperature range from 21degrees to 26 degrees centigrade. Weā€™re located within Ā¼ mile of the South Pacific Ocean so good clean water. Rarely is there anything in the sea strainers.

The only access to the Port motorā€™s raw water pump is to lie over the top of the engine. What a job!!! And always something Iā€™m reluctant to tackle.

Iā€™m now at the point of ā€œnext time around when itā€™s time to deal with your seawater pumpā€; and Iā€™ve asked ā€œask yourself what you could do NOW in order to make the NEXT TIME you need to service your pump a lot easierā€.

I intend to order: two FC-RKIT fuel cooler removal kits

Iā€™m seeking your advice as to from your experience what would be your expectation that my SMX pumps are nearly due for a major overhaul?Ā  Should I be including two SMX Repair kits; SMX-REBKIT-17xx in my order?. On the one hand I donā€™t want to be buying the repair kits now if the expectation is that they wouldnā€™t be needed for another 2+ years. On the other, I donā€™t want to have the impellors etc. out of the existing pumps only to find that they are nearly due for a major overhaul.

    Your recommendation is sought.

    SMX Longevity

Thanks, Richard for your experience. I’m fully aware of the Nordic Tug 37; a good friend of mine has one which I think is the only Nordic Tug in Australia. He’s still perservering with the Sherwood pump despite my advice to change to a SMX. Knowing your boat gives me a lot of confidence in your reponse; many thanks, Bob

    SMX raw water pump longevity

FWIW, I replaced the Sherwood pump in my 37 Nordic Tug’s 6BT 5.9 M3 with an SMX, eight years and 5400 hours ago. With impeller replacements every year or two, it is still working perfectly.
