Hi All
Thought some may find this interesting.. I have pulled my SB aftercooler from my 6bta 330.. I was actually removing the turbo as I noticed 3 of the 4 bolts holding the riser were sheared off (another post) While removing the turbo I knew the aftercooler was overdue.. so thought why not . I have a week or 2.. so off it came.
Its been 3 years since I last pulled it.. and at the time the boat was new to me 20 odd years old and i dont think the aftercooler had been pulled prior. The housings were ropey, the cores suspect and generally unloved a fair bit of work got them useable and succeeded pressure testing – following SBmar protocol… alco metalube etc.. .
Even though I wasnt loving them as much as I should – 3 years is better than never. So I I pumped Rydlyme through it (had some left) to clean the core.. then stripped it. The core took a bit of beating with a lump hammer to get out (I have a machined slab of metal that fits on the shoulder of the core end, to stop damaging it) but looks like it was just the emulsified grease that caused it..
Housing and core are in no worse shape than 3 years ago and i’m surprised how clean it was.. bear in mind there is no fresh water flush as yet.. (still on the list)
Its definitely worth using the SBMar protocol for aftercoolers.. makes things so much easier to maintain.
Steve
