Aftercooler Leak 6BTA

This past weekend I found out my heat exchanger was leaking from the end cap gasket.  Saltwater was spraying on the engine.  I took the end cap off and noticed the 2 surfaces were smooth.  New gaskets on order.  What is the best way to clean and protect the engine surface where the water was spraying.  This is for a 6BTA 370hp engine.

Now you state its the heat exchanger end cap/s that were leaving, seems obvious to inspect, clean and install new gaskets (ensuring the end caps are still in good shape and “coned” enough to provide pressure on the new gaskets). Then a fresh water washdown of the engine to remove salt and a run to warm it through afterwards. I personally use this product sprayed onto engines first to thoroughly clean them prior to washing, along with the bilge areas, rinse with fresh, run to dry them thoroughly, then repaint areas that need it, and spray a little lanolin around only on parts that really need a bit of extra protection from the salt environment. Understand you may not get the product stateside, but I’m sure there’s popular similar products.

Sorry Tony I meant to say the heat exchanger.  Aftercooler is fine as I service it yearly using your protocol.  The heat exchanger was last serviced 3 years ago.  Boat is trailered and the system is flushed with fresh water after every outing.  The heat exchanger was leaking a small stream when I noticed it.  Engine never did overheat and at the wash rack water was coming out the exhaust.  When I removed the end plate the tan round gasket was shot.

When was the last time your aftercooler was on the bench and torn down and then serviced per my protocol? Your post sounds scary to me, very scary.
