I am coming due to replace my start bank.  It is two 8D 12Volt AGM batteries. I think this is overkill but that’s the way the boat was when I bought it four years ago. Starting and charging system are all 12 volts.  Can I safely go with a single battery?

I’m also considering getting rid of my two 8Ds and replacing with two group 31 AGMs, dedicated to starting my 6BTAs.

I could wire these in parallel to double the amps capacity at cranking and could eliminate the “PAR” switch and solenoids. Essentially eliminating the 8Ds which are massive and dangerously heavy to move. And I will gain a full 8D tray space like Brian for supplies/fluids etc.

Same charging setup as Jay. Port charges starting bank1. Starboard charges house bank2 , Gen charges its own battery bank3. Onboard 120v battery charger which charges all banks provided by shore or generator power.

Anyone else would like to help Jay with his decision?

    Thanks

    Braille Batteries

I replaced my 8D batteries with Braille Endurance B7548 batteries. I put two Braille batteries in one 8D box and use the other 8D box for storage. They’re not cheap but pulling two 50 lb. batteries is easier than pulling two 140 lb. batteries.

I have a Riviera 40 with twin engines and also have a paralleling circuit. The system setup is the port engine alternator charges the start bank and the starboard engine charges house bank.  Riviera recommends starting the port engine first. My question is do I really need two 8D batteries just to start the engines. A friend with the same engines has a single 8D as his start battery.

    Do you have twin engines?

If you do you may have a battery parallel which is helpful if one of the batteries is weak or dead.

If you only have a single engine, are your other batteries near your starting batteries in case you needed a “jump”.

This will come down to personal preference
