Am I going to cause any damage though running for a couple of hours at a time in “low idle” mode (550 RPM)? The cummins manual doesn’t say anything but I’ve read elsewhere that running below 600 RPM for extended periods can cause problems.

…. if I can get by another way.

Sure, drift live baits or jig ’em up. šŸ˜‰

Trolling for stripers requires a speed through the water of 2.5-3kts max, especially in the spring with the fat, slow migratory fish.

With two engines at 600 RPM Iā€™m at about 5.5 kts. Dropping to one engine gets me down to about 3.5-4 kts. One engine on slow idle gets me to 3-3.5. Then I can drag a bucket and/or deploy the tabs for extra drag to get me down to 3.

Obviously the optimal solution is trolling valves but since I bought the boat a few months ago Iā€™ve amassed a huge backlog of to-do items and Iā€™d like to put off any ā€œoptionalā€ items for a season or two. Plus I may only be in the bay one more season and most other places Iā€™d end up Iā€™d have no need to troll that slow. So $3-$5k investment doesnā€™t seem warranted right now if I can get by another way.

Not sure of why you need to run that slow, but in the real scheme of things, no long term damage..

What don’t you fill in all of the details of the application and use?
