EFFECTIVE REDUCTION OF NOISE AND VIBRATION OF INTERNAL COMBUSTION DIESEL ENGINES IN MARINE INSTALLATIONS

Seaboard Marine & Barry Controls decided to work together to develop and market two new engine mount designs that have been based on over 30+ years of the field experience that Seaboard Marine has accumulated on over 1000+ Marine diesel installations used in real applications. Seaboard Marine has been in business for over 35 years and has supplied a wide variety of custom mounting systems to help with sound suppression and/or vibration control issues for both marine engines and remote-mounted marine transmissions.

Our two new designs, due to both a newly formulated synthetic rubber compound that extends the durometer & modulus ranges, will cover most any application for diesel engines in the 200-750 HP range and covers 1000 lb. thru 4000 lb. engine / transmission packages. We looked extensively at various options and designs (and even manufacturers), and our testing has confirmed that what we have come up with will out-perform any mount in its class currently being sold or marketed today, period. Plus, our pricing is very competitive and our mounts are MADE IN U.S.A.


Seaboard Marine’s SMX Barry Controls Marine Mounts are designed to provide effective noise and vibration isolation of marine engines up to, but not limited to 1,000 hp. One of the most important features of Barry Controls Marine Mounts is their ability to isolate vibration while transmitting full propeller thrust, efficiently isolating engine noise and vibration from the hull of the vessel. This improves the reliability of equipment, and provides unmatched occupant comfort, particularly during start up or while at low RPMs.

Some of our unique engine mount features include:

  • Our “SMX -1″ mount (BLUE stripe on stud) was specifically designed to replace “part-for-part” mounts used by all Cummins 6CTA 8.3, QSC8.3, QSL9, QSB 6.7, CAT 3116, 3126, C-7, All Yanmar 6LY/LYA engines, including many JD models, and other engine in this same class range that use a 1” stud and 5” mounting centers. For the older CAT 3208 engines, they are also superior to the obsolete Bushing Inc. mount used but will require engine modification for correct fitting. 
  • Our “SMX-2” mount (RED stripe on stud)  is a perfect replacement for all QSM 11, CAT 3176, CAT 3196, C-12, JD engines in the 9-12 liter range, and many others.
  • Vibration Inserts and STUD (1” x 14 TPI): Both mounts have uniquely formulated & designed vulcanized captive synthetic rubber (chloroprene) insets that are more capable of adjusting to a wider range of vibration frequencies that leads to that thing called “linear vibration”, a wider range of both weight and thrust loads, and has a “stud material” superior to all others. This has been the down fall of many mount designs, especially from one manufacturer that copied this base design developed by Barry about 30 years ago. Our stud is made from “very strong stuff” compared to mounts from Bushings Inc, R&D, Isoflex, and others. We personally asked each of them to verify.

Material: C-1541,C1141 or C1045 Steel. Heat Treat to Rockwell C-27-C-36, 92 KSI Minimum yield, 120KSI MIN Tensile,  plate per BARRY spec 808, Bake 3 hours at 190C to remove Hydrogen Embrittlement after plating

“ASTM F3125 / F3125M – 15a” this is a Standard Specification for High Strength Structural Bolts, Steel and Alloy Steel, Heat Treated, 120 ksi (830 MPa)” 

  • Casting material and finish: Our main casting is made in newly designed permanent molding process using A356 high strength heat treated Aluminum alloy. This alloy was developed and has proved to be the best aluminum alloy that can be used in marine applications. Very high strength (upwards of 34,000 PSI), with superior corrosion resistance, and in addition, offers unique characteristics for the marine environment when used in a highly stressed application that is subject to multiple loads in multiple directions at any given time.
  • Mount finish consists of a cathodic process proprietary e-coating and meets the highest specifications for a marine environment, and easily meets our own SMX “Marine Tuff” requirements. Really, all have to do it “LOOK” at it to see the quality that was put into it.

Chloroprene elastomer has an operating temperature range of -20°F to +180°F (-30°C to +85°C) and is resistant to oils, salt spray, ozone and oil-based solvents.
