December 9, 2019 at 2:23 pm Iā€™m in process of deleting fuel block and cooler and following advice from ā€œTonyā€™s Tipsā€ and also have reviewed the YouTube video. I am confused regarding the use of multiple fittings (5) for reconnecting the 1/2ā€supply and 3/8ā€ return lines. The Cummins original set up is with reusable face seal fittings. Why not use one each of the existing 1/2ā€ 45deg (supply) and 3/8ā€ straight (return) fittings? These fittings are very easily removed from or…

    • Trans gear sudden shift in to reverse

August 6, 2023 at 12:15 pm Boat is a 41 ft salon bridge w/ twin Cummins 6BTA, 370 and ZF Hurth HSW800 A2 – 2.0 gears. I was running in forward, both engines at approximately 2700 RPM, 15-16 kts. Felt a sudden sort of jerk motion and what sounded like out of control engine revs. I immediately pulled both throttles back to idle and transmission shifters to neutral, noticing instantly the port engine had shut down. Starboard side was performing properly , shifting prop…

August 13, 2023 at 4:53 pm The reverse clutches are likely jammed so they will not release from reverse. Ā  Likely pull the gearbox time and take it to a mechanic or at least get the mechanic to your boat to confirm.. Check the shifter mechanism also as this should not have occured. Ā  That’s all I can offer.     Hm, a thought.Ā  Ā Use a pressure guage of about a 500 to 600 PSI range to check for pressure in reverse.Ā  Ā check pressure to reverse when shifter to…

    • Which oil?

September 5, 2022 at 9:44 am Engines are 6BTA 5.9 370 HP Have been using Shell Rotella T4 15w40 for many years but recently hearing multi-viscosity not the best way to go for my type of use, 65 degrees F and up, 100 hrs/year, 6 month season in Great Lakes. Should I be using straight 40 weight or something else or stick with what Iā€™ve been using? Would like to hear some opinions. Thanks

September 5, 2022 at 2:17 pm Who is giving you this info? Cummins recommends 15W-40 for normal operation at all temps above 5 deg F.

    • Relocating oil pressure sender.

November 4, 2019 at 8:05 am Cummins 6BTA-5.9, mfg 1998. I am removing the fuel cooler and fuel block and am following the video provided by SB Marine. Moving the oil pressure sender seems pretty simple but unlike the video with one sender, I have an additional sensor. I think I spotted two hex head plugs, in the area where I would relocate the sender. My question is, are these two ports equal and is this where I need to place the second sensor? I am not at the boat now so …

June 1, 2022 at 8:50 am Rob, Thanks, I confirmed I have 1/8″ npt but only 2 gallery ports both tucked up behind the RW pump and stop solenoid. If I cant get to those easily (thinking I cannot), any issue wiring the alarm sender to the top of the oil filter housing?Ā  TY

    • Barrymounts removed

This topic has 2 replies, has 2 voices, and was last updated byNauti-est 3 years ago

May 8, 2021 at 5:43 am I have completed replacement of all my engine mounts with SMX purple mounts. I noticed a single digit number stamped in the underside of each of the Barrymounts I removed, not all the same but some duplicates. Can anyone say what these numbers mean?

    • Engine mounts, proper hardware arrangement?

This topic has 3 replies, has 3 voices, and was last updated by34atlantic 3 years ago

February 24, 2021 at 5:22 am I have looked at quite a few engine mounts and am now confused as to what is the proper order to install the fasteners. I have seen, from bottom to top, 2 half nuts, washer, engine bracket, washer, 1 full nut. I have seen the same arrangement in reverse. And a third arrangement, full nut top and bottom with no half nut. So……. what is the proper way to do this?

March 2, 2021 at 11:21 am I removed a stud from my cummins barry mount this weekend by accident because I couldn’t get the adjustment nuts to loosen and the stud unthreaded from the mount. I believe after looking at the purple mounts for sale on here that they are fully rebuildable.

    • Engine mounts

February 21, 2021 at 3:00 pm I have been looking at my engine/gear mounts. They all appear to be in the same condition, some cracking of rubber and the cross pin shows as laying on the bottom of the hole in the side of the mount housing. The boat is 1999 with twin Cummins 6BTA5.9, <400 hours. No alignment issues known and no vibrations noted. Should I be concerned or is this normal?

February 17, 2020 at 5:22 pm I am just about through with the setup and calibration of a Maretron Fuel Flow system on my 38ft boat with twin Diamond 370’s. That may be something to look into as well. It hooks up to your NMEA 2000 system and data is available on many chartplotters and other connected devices. They have various “sensors” for engines of different flow rate requirements. The system requires two sensors for each engine (supply and Return) an…

    • Reseal fuel line bracket bolts ?

This topic has 1 reply, has 2 voices, and was last updated byTony Athens 4 years ago

December 30, 2019 at 8:32 am I have recently removed the 5 fuel line hold down brackets (6BTA) to allow removal of the Bosch injection pump. I noticed upon removal of the bolts, they appear to have a reddish colored sealant on them. Iā€™m ready to reinstall them but am curious. Do they go into a wet portion of the water jacket or into a blind tapped bore? Iā€™m thinking I will be using RTV (red) on these bolts when I put them back in but not sure if itā€™s necessary. I would like…

December 30, 2019 at 6:52 pm Clean all—–Use “Rectorseal #5” (or at least a common lithium based wheel bearing grease) for assembly…Dry assembly of anything on a “marine engine” is a no-no in my book. Cummins may even learn that someday as they have shown some signs that way. Using Rectorseal #5 between mating surfaces on a engine in a marine environment pays BIG dividends years later when things need maintenance and you have …
