    • Small fuel leak

September 7, 2020 at 11:39 am 1989, 6 BTA, 300 hp , CPL 970 Engine is experiencing a small fuel leak. It looks like itā€™s coming from the fuel filter housing. It looks like there is of some kind of nut. I would have to remove the fuel filter to get at it. Would tightening this nut potentially solve the problem? Can it be tightened? Is there a gasket under there? Included some pics and appreciate the feedback.

September 8, 2020 at 5:45 am Hi Tony, Thanks for your reply. I do plan to take it apart and replace the gaskets and O rings. Is that odd looking nut (in my first pic) attached to the bottom of a threaded cover or does it move independently? Thanks and be well. Bob

May 21, 2020 at 3:53 am Here’s the history: Recently installed new turbo, Gear coolers, upgraded turbo coolant line to 1″, new SMX 1716 RW pump, serviced and pressure tested AC per SBMAR protocol. Obviously drained all coolant approx. 5 gallons came out clean with barely any sediment. Replaced about 3.5 gallons of coolant and ran engine at idle speed with ET cap off. April 15, 2020 at 7:45 am Can someone provide me with the thread size for the turbo coolant connection on the 6b head? I am upgrading the line to connect to the back of the block and want to plug the head connection. Any help would be appreciated and would save me the time of going to the boat.

    • Expansion tank temp

This topic has 3 replies, has 2 voices, and was last updated byBob Neill 4 years ago

June 2, 2019 at 3:23 pm Hello All So I splashed the boat two days ago and while running to the marina I shot some temps with a laser. Port and Stb. manifolds were around178 degrees, HXā€™s were around 120 and exhaust mixer at 90. All looks good. However, when I compared the expansion tank temps the starboard was at 178 and the port tank was around 128 a fifty degree difference. Can someone explain why there is a 50 degree delta? 6btaā€™s, Cpl 970, ZF 220a gears.

August 2, 2018 at 4:38 pm I recently purchased an SMX raw water pump to replace the Sherwood in my 5.9 6BTa 300 hp, CPL 970. The After coolers have been upgraded. The gear cooler was located between the raw water pump and the after-cooler with the new install I want to move them above the air filter with the cummins bracket and clamp. Hereā€™s my dilemma the aftercooler has a 1 3/4 output and the gear cooler is 1 1/2. Also, the aftercooler cap is straight, no 90 degree t…

    • Turbo Removal? 6bta Cpl 970, 300 hp

March 24, 2018 at 12:12 pm Hi folks, Well just what I expected After reading post on this form. Took off starboard factory wet exhaust elbow due to leaking around the weld and low and behold, looks like the turbo has seen some salt water. I had some light black smoke towards the end of the season (Iā€™m in New England) and this most likely was the cause. The aftercoolers had been serviced seaboard style and filters were replaced. So now here is my question. What steps sho…

    • New Raw water Pump?

This topic has 10 replies, has 3 voices, and was last updated byBob Neill 5 years ago

July 6, 2018 at 12:03 pm Looks like I need to replace my ā€œjunkā€ Sherwood water pump! What pump and accessories do you recommend for a 6B, CPL 970, 300 hp? Inlet port is 2ā€, outlet port 1.5, I would also like to reconfigure the gear cooler placement with the proper bracket. The PO installed it between outlet port and aftercoolers. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

July 10, 2018 at 6:00 am Rob Thanks for the reply. Reached out to Kevin via email. I do not have any of the hardware for mounting the gear cooler looks like I need part 8 and 9 in the diagram. I believe they are standard coolers which Iā€™ll be replacing next season.

    • Gear Cooler Placement

February 26, 2018 at 2:33 pm Hello All, Have a question about gear cooler placement within the raw water coolant loop. I have a Cummins 6bta CPL 970, ZF 220A (1.55 to 1) rebuilt in 2005. My gear coolers are between the raw water pumps and the aftercoolers opposed to aftercoolers to turbos. Does it make a difference? Included a pic both are set up the same.

March 1, 2018 at 6:32 pm IMO, placement where you have is is fine.. We routinely relocate them there on 6CTA 8.3’s and QSL9’s as the factory location is stuffed behind the aftercooler making for a nightmare to deal with.. That location must of come from a senior couch engineer .. Tony

    • Help with after cooler core removal

This topic has 12 replies, has 7 voices, and was last updated byScott Robson 6 years ago

January 22, 2018 at 6:27 pm Hello Everyone, Seeking some advice on removing the core from a 6bta after-cooler housing. Everything looks good from the core to the caps but I canā€™t seem to get the core to slide out. I have successfully moved it to a point where one end is flush with the housing using lots of PB Blaster and WD 40 using some persuasion and a block of wood but canā€™t get it to move any further. It looks like the plastic on the core has swelled and making things …

February 16, 2018 at 9:04 am You can also take them to some one who has a sonic cleaner , that can heat up the housing and also cleans corrosion between core and housing, or soak the whole unit ( with caps and 0-rings off) in diluted Barnacle Buster, try this before beating them out. You can clean cores with Barnacle Buster or similar product after you have them out.
