    Hello Everyone,

Seeking some advice on removing the core from a 6bta after-cooler housing.

Everything looks good from the core to the caps but I can’t seem to get the core to slide out. I have successfully moved it to a point where one end is flush with the housing using lots of PB Blaster and WD 40 using some persuasion and a block of wood but can’t get it to move any further. It looks like the plastic on the core has swelled and making things difficult. Any suggestions? I’m trying to upload some pics but getting an error code 601. Thanks in advance.

You can also take them to some one who has a sonic cleaner , that can heat up the housing and also cleans corrosion between core and housing, or soak the whole unit ( with caps and 0-rings off) in diluted Barnacle Buster, try this before beating them out. You can clean cores with Barnacle Buster or similar product after you have them out.

    Thanks

Thanks again, Wasn’t sure if it had a specific torque. I’ll snug it up tight with greased threads.

IMO, Torque specs do not apply here——————Snug to tight with a typical 7-9″ wrench–You need to learn the feel screwing a 8 mm bolt that is well lubed with grease into aluminum ……..

    Torque spec. question

    Hi All,

Serviced the after coolers the Seaboard way, thanks for the video. Just one question, what are the torque specs for the cap bolts? Thanks in advance.

Can the core be replaced with replacing the entire aftercooler?

    Thanks

If you still haven’t got the core out of the casing try using a 3&1/2 ” abs plastic pipe coupler. It makes a very good drift to finish getting the core out the rest of the way.It will sit right on the edge of the brass of the core. After it is through the coupler might be a little tight coming out of the casing but not a real problem.
Mine was stuck so bad I ended up heating the whole cooler in the barbecue and then pouring cold water down the core quickly to shrink the core before the casing cooled down. Then pounded it out with a sledge hammer.I was lucky and had minimal damage to the core.It sounds like you will just need to coach yours out as you have been doing but using the drift to get that last 1/2 ” out.

Fireisland1, That’s worth a try! Trying not to beat on it and cause damage. Will try the soap idea tomorrow and let you know. Thanks

How about loading up the air side with some heavy liquid soap. Should slide right out.

Looks good in that you don’t have the POS aluminum finned cores circa 2000…. lube and repeated back and forth and keep trimming away the ends of the silicon strips as you expose more and more of them.

    Thanks Tony

Thanks Tony, great forum you created here! Once the core is out, the strips are history! Proceeding cautiously! I’ll send you some pics of the engines. I know you’ll have some suggestions. What’s your opinion on the gear cooler placemen? . Mine aren’t immediately after the pump and before after-cooler.

Your pics uploaded, but if you have others, send them to me direct……………

Yup, just one more reason those silicone strip get tossed when we service the coolers…….. At this point all I can suggest to DO NOT try and save them… Pull & stretch as you can, cut & toss, more oil and work the core as needed back & forth..
