I am about to do winter upgrades on both my engines (6BTA 370HP) — I read the post that removing the old Sherwoods will require a slight lift of the engine. Assuming I use the new SeaBoards as replacements will I in the future have to lift the engine or will the SMX1730 slide right in?

I was able to do a little grinding of the mount under the pump and the SMX pump goes off/on without any issue.

SMX 1730 will it fit without engine lift

I do have SBM 1730 pumps. I have changed impellers many times on my pair of 6BTA’s. I get as much of the fuel cooler plumbing out of the way as possible and wire tie it. P Eng easy. S Eng I either jack up 3/8 to 1/2″ and remove the pump or I have changed without pump removal it’s very tricky and each time I swear and cuss never again. The SBM 1/2″ kit is the way to go.

    Paul,

The way the factory designed the supplied mounting bracket and then cluttered-up the fuel plumbing in that area DOES not allow any pump to just “slide in”.. In fact, just changing an impeller is a full-on knuckle bleeder is many engine rooms..

We did re-design the large diamond shaped mounting plate to allow clearance without having to remove the front engine bracket, but you need to say it this way — one can “jiggle it” in place..

In every installation that uses the mounting bracket (Black) in the attached picture, if doable, add a 1/2″ spacer kit behind it.. That 1/2″ extra clearance makes it much closer to “slide in” .. Dumping the fuel cooler and re-doing the fuel line/hook-up in that area is major as to having good access.. It’s real obvious that the engineer that designed this mount had no clue as to the clearance ramifications it would cause trying to R&R this high maintenance component..

Hopefully an owner like yourself that has gone thru this can add something useful from a “end user” perspective.. Mine comes from doing this in the shop with tons of room and not having to be a contortionist like you have to be inside many boats..—Probably not a fair comparison.

    Tony
