So I closed on the Tiara 4700 Sovran this past week.  Im in the process of figuring out engine work.  So far I’m planning oil and filter service and replace one of the raw water pumps that has a small leak.  Regarding propping, I plan to install EGT gauges and then run the boat again to see what the temps are at cruise and GPH.  On the survey the numbers showed that I am overpropped but before I cut pitch down on the propellers I want to run the boat loaded properly with the EGT gauges.   My current question has to do with aftercooler service.   The boat is a 2007 and has 700hrs on the motors. The boat has been in freshwater until 6 mos ago.  The engine surveyor said that the aftercoolers have been removed previously but I have no information on what services were done and when they were done in the past.  So at this point given it’s been a freshwater boat it’s whole life can I hold off on aftercooler service for until 2 years of salt water use?  Or should I service them now?  Also can anyone give me an estimated cost to remove both coolers, clean and pressure test them and reinstall.  The boat has very good engine access to the coolers.  Thanks in advance.

    Hi Tony,

I just closed on the boat last week so haven’t done anything to the boat yet.  I’m looking at what I need to fo to the boat since taking ownership.   So are you saying that I don’t need to service the aftercoolers now and if I install and flush each time I run the boat I can forget about aftercooler service or significantly extend the time between services?   My biggest question is whether I have to service them now as they’ve only been in salt water less than 6 months?

Regarding the repropping, I really don’t  want to lose too much cruising speed so I was going to pitch down less then what would be recommended initially and see what my EGTs are.   If they are too high then I would consider pitching down further but only if absolutely needed.

Interesting post– buying a fresh water boat (good move) makes the aftercooler thing simple– Basically it is now a now a non- issue and it seems you kinda know that.. Why did you not continue to at least freshwater flush?

So,  START NOW and don’t procrastinate. That should be your #1 Priority regardless of what it takes..

Buy some time while you sort out the prop and learn the boat–EGT gauges are not needed( unless you just want them and like knowing things for later comparisons/references–It’s all about GPH at cruise RPMS with this engine and the dry turbo/manifold system.

Seawater pump ——————————–post a pic of the “small leak”..
