started the boat only to hear and smell that a belt on the port side engine was not spinning. after a little looking, I could see the water pump pulley was frozen. looked a little closer and I can see the leaking pump. pulled the pump today and removed the impeller. looking for info on how to remove the spline and bearings for a rebuild.

    thanks

    mike

The hard part for a DIY is pressing off the front hub. It should be done on a proper hydraulic press with a bearing splitter. Then the snap ring and 2 bearings . clean up everything, replace the mechanical seal, bearings, spacer, snap ring. Then press on a new hub being very careful not to damage the shaft, which should be replace also. Now you can install the impeller and close it up. If you donā€™t have the proper equipment the hub may wobble and decide to go itā€™s own way , and I assure you it will not happen at the dock.
Or you could just buy SMX and forget about it.

    Thanks, Tony

Does the SMX pump use the same impeller as the Sherwoods?

Unless you are total “hands-on” guy from years past, rebuilding one of these pumps is not for the timid.. Personally, because of the “one time” press fit front drive hub, I consider it a throwaway… Plus, some specialized tools are needed to do it right.. Doing it wrong is much more likely without them as this is not a “Hammer & Vise” rebuild project

Better choices are out there..Do some searching on google. Depco Pumps in Florida is a reputable re-builder if you go that way.
