I have a pair of 6 bt’s and I am changing the oil soon. I noticed that both engines have an oil leak where the base of the dip stick housing screws in to the engine.

My questions are, is there an o ring or washer that needs to be replaced there ? If not, can I simply unscrew it and place some sealant on it and tighten it back down?

    Thank you.

If you haven’t already fixed it, I had the same issue and just fixed it on both engines while changing the oil in my boat. There is an o-ring at the base. Both mine were collapsed and no longer sealing. I used o-rings out of a metric kit I have, the dimensions in mm are: OD-16.6, ID-11.8, Section-2.4.

Need the oil drained from the pan first, easy to replace. Finally got rid of that nagging oil seepage.

I can get the serial #’s this weekend.

The dipstick I have looks exactly like this one, short tube with the yellow locking handle.

Thanks for the reply. The oil level is just above the low level, so I think I am good there. I did notice there is a plastic tube that the actual dip stick goes into, I wonder if that has developed a crack?

I am heading down to the boat this weekend and I can take some pictures then.

    Thanks again.

Could be an o-ring at the base of the tube.
Got serial number numbers to post?
    Pics?

But both engines? …. are you sure you are not overfilling and pushing oil out?

Have you gone through this 100% https://www.sbmar.com/articles/oil-pan-capacities-for-cummins-marine-engines/
