Hi there,

First this community is awesome and super appreciate all the info. Yesterday we were headed out fishing and when we were 5 miles outside of the harbor and at cruising speed the engine abruptly shut off. We heard what sounded almost like a release of pressure and thud. All of the pressure and temperature gauges were reading normal and when we went back and looked at the Engine, it looked completely fine. No leaks of anything, burning smell, smoke or anything. We tried to start it and the starter would work but the Engine would not.

We tried to manually crank the engine but it seems to be locked up. I will absolutely admit we are not mechanics and relied heavily on these forums to troubleshoot anything and everything. We checked the values and springs, injectors and injector pump. It is just so odd since there is no sign of anything to explain the engine failure but we are coming to the conclusion that maybe it is something inside and we just need to look at repowering or a rebuild.

Before we go this route, is there anything else that people would look at or troubleshoot? I thought maybe the gearbox but will need to pull the engine to examine that either way.

    Thanks in advance,

    Shannon

    Additional info

Also, I should clarify after the engine shut down and we visually inspected it and determined nothing was leaking or overheating, the starter engaged and tried to turn the engine but the engine would not turn.

Cummins 6BTA 5.9 abruptly shuts down underway

I’ll be the first to admit I’m not a mechanic and looking for advice and help on this issue. We didn’t have the engine barring socket/tool so we turned the nut on the injector pump geared to the engine.

We used this method before and it turned completely fine. Are you saying that if we used the tool on the other end of the engine it could have a different outcome and not to rely on the way we did it? (Again, new to a lot of this and looking to learn)

That IS NOT how to bar over an engine that you think is “LOCKED UP” ..

You said the engine was stuck? Now you are talking about your injection pump? What am I missing?

We tried to rotate it with a bar on the nut on the fuel pump drive. It’s 1 1/16 inch socket. Picture attached.

A quick shut down like you describe sounds 100% like the fuel solenoid lost power–simple to check/fix

But, when you say the engine seems to be locked up needs to be looked at much closer..

Explain exactly how you are trying to bar the engine over.
