6BT 280 hp ,engine have only 100 hr ,after driving 3 hr engine overheated , at 2000 rpm , there was no more coolant in the reservoir , the coolant was coming out from the <valve bleeder > next to the reservoir, I turn the engine off at 280 degree. I added coolant and drove 20 min and the temperature was at 190 degrees. There was white smoke and it smelled like diesel out from the muffler. The second day there was no more coolant in the reservoir, I filled it up with coolant and the engine did not start
, the impeller its working perfect . no leak, and no bad hose ,removed the injectors and there was a water on the piston , i start the engine and got the water out ,and filled it up transmission oil, the question is how can the water go to the cylinder beside the head gasket ,or is it possible for the crack exhaust manifold leak to the piston ? Do i need to remove the head? thanks for seaboard marine to have the nice site free for providing credible information.

    Appreciate all the help

just a quick question what if the boat was not overheating and also the head gasket looked fine can i still have a cracked exhaust manifold? anybody know of a DIYS pressure test.

are cummins engines not susceptible to bent rods from hydraulically locking the engine? I cringed when I saw that the engine was started with water on the cylinder.

If I got it right, I undestand that the water you’ve found in the cylinder is coolant/fresh water, not raw water, if so, that is the symptom of a cracked exahust manifold (very common in an overheating situation) or a blown head gasket. IMO you need to do a pressure test on the manifold, but that isn’t the cause of the overheating, you need to find that out. Check the raw water pump, the heat exchangers and thermostat.

Once you do that (please keep us posted) check yourĀ  engine temps alarms and sensors, yo can’t wait until the engine reaches 280ĀŗF to shut it down. SBMAR has good options in aftermarket allarms and sensors, check https://www.sbmar.com/product-category/instrumentation/alarm-switches/

hey my man did you find out what the problem was.

im having the same problem whit my 6bt just took my head off today to find out why the motor locked up after sitting for about 6 months. After taking head off found one cylinder filled with water and the other cylinders were corroded pretty bad as well but after cleaning in good with mystery oil and scotch bright pads got it freed up. but still was wondering how the water got into the cylinders. any info would be greatly appreciated my dudes Aloha!Ā

I think you should post the picture of your exhaust manifold and turbo you sent me….A “blind forum” cannot do it’s job without “seeing” what you “see”………………………………….. Let’s “show” the whole story here..
