A local cummins shop recommends getting rid of the fuel pump on the Qsb 5.9 and going with a 100 or 150gpm lift pump instead.   His opinion is the original fuel pumps on the engine is prone to failure.    Any thoughts ?

The engine is a 2005 with 143 hours. I stripped the engine down to the block to service everything and repaint it. So I have the ecm and fuel pump already removed….and you’re right it was a pain.

Are there fuel pumps more suitable for the marine application instead of an automotive style ? Or would it be better while it is apart to replace with a newer style OEM fuel pump ?

How old is your QSB 425 and have you had a failure? That should your answer.

Yes back in 2004-2006 the QSB 5.9 fuel pumps had a high failure rate –maybe 25% ?  Now days=NO

As far as replacing the pump–The access / work involved to R&R it  is worse that anyone could imagine. Some couch engineer/designer  buried it behind the ECM.

As to an aftermarket pump–That would be your call–It would need to be continuous duty,  and have a flow rate of at least 45 GPH at 10-12 PSI..
