Same here as Bill D – repowered in 2001 to include the Buck style bronze “squid screens” and no internal basket strainers. Zero issues. Simplifies and saves space in the engine room.

December 22, 2019 at 9:30 pm #85981I added external strainers similar to the ones Bill linked above several months ago leaving the original groco internal strainers fitted.
Prior to this the internal strainers where catching plenty of seaweed and other items, now they stay empty
Guess it depends a lot on local conditions.
When it rains hard here, the mountain streams flush out tremendous amounts of silt and leaves, twigs, branches, seeds, trash, whatever man or nature drops on the ground.
Our marina is in a bay, has a stream right through it, so in order to get to clean water, Iāve got to plow through that crap!
I wouldnāt dare try that without a good strainer.
Iād like to add some external strainers too, maybe next haulout.

I own my fifth 6BTA 370.
None had in hull strainers.
All had positive flow strainers, nothing on the “inside”.
I’ve never had an issue with water flow over 1000s of hours of running.December 20, 2019 at 12:08 pm #85768

The raw water inlet/strainer is always a great place to do some overkill.
As your raw water demands may increase later, you may add deck wash, baitwells, generator, air conditioning, etc.
oversizing the strainer can also provide some ācushionā when the water is full of debris.
I like to create a manifold of bronze fittings, tees with valves just downstream of the strainer with the engine supply straight through, and accessories off of the branches.December 20, 2019 at 9:44 am #85744
AnonymousInactiveAt Seaboard Marine if we did the install we would use the Groco ARG 2000.

Sea Water Strainers
Straight from the B/C, QSB/QSC/QSL, QSM11 Installation Manual.
