Hi I just purchased a boat with twin cummins 5.9 6 bta they are the 210hp according to the serial # (thanks by the way).  there is no maintenace history available so I am trying to get the motors back to a point that i feel comfortable heading offshore.

When changing the fuel filters i noticed a lot of water in one separator which would probably account for some white smoke when i hit around 2200rpm . So not knowing how long this has been going on i am contemplating changing the injectors. (1800 hours on meters).

Looking for advice on what injectors to use seems like there a re a lot of options out there. Your thoughts and advice will be greatly appreciated. Cheers

Hello! Sometimes fuel injectors are ruled guilty without a reason, the truth is that they are very reliable (and expensive), As Neto said, first deal with the basics, filters, I would also check fuel lines and tanks pick up tubes.

You say “some white smoke at 2200 RPM”  Are those   2200 RPM under load or at the dock in neutral?

Does your engine reaches their normal temperature around 190ºF

Besides the fuel system you can also check and adjust the valves clearance  considering the engine hours.

I wouldn’t just arbitrarily change the injectors right now.                                       You need to get the fuel supply and filtration taken care of first, and that will include finding the source of the water in the system.    If there’s a lot of water in the separator, you almost certainly have water in the tanks.                                    Once you’re sure that you have clean fuel to the HP pump, run the motor to do a break test on each injector.

Is the smoke only at startup or all the time? Definately drain the water separator and change those racor filters and fuel filters. I wouldn’t touch the injectors yet, maybe polish your fuel tanks.
