I am in the process of purchasing a 2003 Sea Ray 460 Sundancer, I just had the sea trial with a certified Cummins mechanic on board who had the computers hooked up to provide accurate readings during the 2-hour trip. Boat was loaded with full fuel, half water tanks, and 5 people on board, not much gear as the owner had already taken out most of his possessions.

I am including the results (PDF File) based on these readings. The broker indicated that the owner had the props redone to match the engine specificationā€™s for required optimum fuel burn. Looking for advice if the Sea Ray is over propped as was Sea Rayā€™s normal process to get more speed or I am OK with the current readings indicating I am in the sweet spot for cruising at 2200 to 2300 RPMā€™s.

If over propped I still need to bring the boat from West Coast of Florida to East Coast about a 14-hour trip, what would be a good RPM range to run until I can get them re propped when I get hauled out for new bottom paint.
    Thanks.

    Boost

Sorry to jump on the thread with a question but also having a 480 ce Iā€™m always interested in looking at other peoples numbers.when I saw the boost numbers in the low 20s at 2300 rpms I realized thatā€™s way below my operating numbers.I realize different boats with same engine get some variation in numbers but as I usually run at 2100 rpm and see a boost of 37 or 38 on the gauges so those numbers jumped out at me.Any insight into this would be appreciated.Bill

    More specs

Interesting they didn’t provide fuel burn at WOT. Also where were those EGTS taken? Post turbo or pre turbo?
Overall looks ok but need more info to validate. Thanks

    Response

Thanks for brining this detail up, I will send pics next week when I can get back to inspect the vessel. So far survey has come back good and I believe a good price. I will send pics that may help me in the price if needed.

    Aftercoolers

Great news, owner spent the money in November 2019 new aftercoolers and heat exchangers all Cummins OEM. Had the receipts and my mechanic verified, he was very happy also the owner did not just put the old hoses but spent the money for new hoses and all clamps.

From what we have so far she seems to be dialed in real nice.

    Oh Yeah, and…….

What kind of aftercooler maintenance has been done? Concrete records showing the work? This has been sitting in Salt Water so in an ideal world those aftercoolers should have been service per the SBMAR protocol 4 to 5 times………

If the owner was truly educated that will tell you a lot

    Pictures Please

The fuel burn rates are right on the curve of the Diamond 450 at 2300. That is a static snapshot of one situation and does not give this forum enough info to help. There are ~900 hours on these engines and there is no indication of how many of those hours are with these props and how many were with the factory props. The exhaust temps at 2300 look good as well.

Please post some pictures of the turbos, aftercoolers, exhaust setup and the engine compartment in general. We need to see the discoloration on the Turbo and Aftercoolers and the piping in between to assess the amount of “Abuse” these engines may have suffered.

In my experience of looking at larger Sea Rays’ the 460 was a standout(not in a good way) in overpropping from the factory. You may have found the rare example of a 460 that had an educated owner that mitigated the root issue and then operated those engines with compassion. The only way we will have a shot at knowing is through those pictures.

If you have not yet agreed on price you can always negotiate a reduction in price to offset the head replacement that you should probably do just as a n “Insurance” for future life on these engines.

Let us know and please post some pics
