Description
We have been designing and building custom marine exhaust systems for close to 30 years now. As the years passed, we kept a few thoughts paramount in how we did things…
Always leave room for improvement; one size (or base design) never fits all, and always think “out of the box” as to where improvements can be made. The picture attached is from a riser/mixer system I built in 2002-ish for a pair of 6CTA 8.3’s in the F/V Mirage. I pulled the engines in 2011 with 29,000+ hours on them and then installed QSL 9’s. We re-used the exact same risers and, currently, the QSL9’s have just passed the 30,000 hours mark—Joe V., the owner of the Mirage, does not want to re-use them again when I repower again in Jan 2020 with new T3 QSL9’s—I told him, they don’t make them like they used to.. Yes, that was a joke, but at 60,000 total hours on these mixers tells me I must do something right.
Now back to SMX designed hump hoses.. It just seems that longer hump hoses and a triple hump hose would have solved so many compromises I have made in the past to make it all “Seaboard Right”… The longer end cuff can now be can be cut to fit as needed, we now have easier alignment and less strain on all the components, and water mixing will be vastly improved due to the larger humps and the now, unique triple hump design, by more “rapids” in the run to mix it all up… Again, got to keep thinking “out of the box” and continue to believe there is always “leave room for improvement”. The longer cuffs, and triple hump design should have come a long time ago… And of course, our silicone hump hose meets or exceeds all the applicable specs that our competitors brag about, but what our competitors can’t brag about is meeting our overall quality and specific designs for wet marine exhaust systems, or, offer them in a Black High Temp silicone with added overall durability…………Tony
If you need to try to make a slight bend with these hump hoses it is possible.
See some bench tests below. Notice the clamps added near the humps, This helps reduce kinking or “ovaling.”
