If you have recently changed your alternator, or associated wiring, and your mechanical engine doesn’t turn off when you turn off the key… you need this diode! The diode keeps power from back feeding to the ignition circuit. Read more below.

If you connect the ignition wire to the alternator field without this diode, voltage will leak back to the ignition wire which holds the fuel shut off solenoid open even after you turn off the key. Think of it as a one way check valve that allows juice into the alternator field, but keeps it from leaking back to the harness.
